I was away for the weekend (one last fling in Moab before winter - woohoo!) and missed participating in the El Fuego thread below, but I noticed you said you'd upgraded your frame from bushings to bearings. I'm curious what drove you to do so. Was it to address a perceived problem, enhance performance, or just a case of upgrade-itis? I've got an El Salty w/ bushings, and maybe I don't know what I'm missing, but to me they seem perfectly fine and do not limit the travel in any sense. And of course, the bike is nice and stiff. Anyway, I don't have any cash burning a hole in my pocket, and I'm totally happy with my bike; I was just curious as to your motivation for the upgrade and what it bought you. Thx,
- Joe

the time came for me to replace my bushings about two months after last spring's 24 hours of Snowshoe. I realized after that race that the Fuego was just not the bike for the hard technical riding I often face around here. When your rear wheel slides off wet roots and rocks as much as mine does, you start noticing how flexy or (unflexy) your frame is. Now, for normal purposes, the fuego was plenty stiff, but in super-technical or high-speed technical situations, even at 160-170 lbs, I was flexing the bike.
Anyway, I decided that an upgrade would be worthwhile seeing as I needed do something to fix my bike anyway and...well...I guess I'm simply justifying spending $700 bucks. ButHey, my fiance was sold on my reasoning....so....uh....anyway.

I did the "double" bearing option because Sherwood led me to believe last year that my frame with single bearings would be flexier than with bushings. The upgrade added almost a pound. And the difference is incredible. The travel was upped by virtue of the rocker he's using on the retrofit rear triangles. I wasn't going for more travel, it was just an added perk.

Not knowing your marital situation, I can't tell you to do the upgrade. I don't want to risk getting a reputation as a homewrecker.
