| Heckler questions | FoolCyclist Nov 28, 2002 1:51 PM | | Does anyone know the weight of the hecler frame with the 5th Element? Either large or medium sizes.
Also, whats the deal with the FOX forx not clearing the downtube? I have heard the adjustment knobs on the FOX will hit the frame when the fork is turned far enough. Has any one experienced this? What sizes does it effect? Can you remedy it by adding a spacer under the bottom cup, or are there some headsets that have more clearence at the bottom cup?

| My 'nilla clears the downtube. | RVM Nov 28, 2002 6:39 PM | | And it's only set at 80mm. So, I guess it depends on the frame. |

message: I've noticed that there is contact between the adjuster knob of my
fox vanilla RLC fork and the frame of the heckler when turning the bars to the
right. There is a worn spot on the frame from knob contact now, I'm afraid a
really hard crash might dent the frame. Any suggestions? BTW I have a King
headset.
- Hi Ben,
This can be an issue with the some forks and smaller frame sizes (Usually
the Small and Medium).
We have asked all the fork manufacturers to keep the fork cap/adjuster
height to a minimum to keep this from being a problem, but we can't really
force them to make them lower.
Lockout levers are usually even higher and add to the problem.
You'll just have to be careful.
No way around it, sorry.
Thanks for choosing Santa Cruz, and let me know if you have any other
questions.

| FSA Headset | Benno Nov 28, 2002 8:31 PM | | Someone on the photo gallery forum suggested a FSA Pig DH headset; I emailed FSA and they said this:
"The lower stack height on a Chris King headset is 13.7mm according the their website. The Pig DH is 16mm and the Sky Pilot headset is 14mm."
I'm not sure that a 2.3mm difference would solve the problem. |

| It's twoo, it's twoo | Fisheadgib Nov 30, 2002 7:23 PM | | I've had my Heckler since Sept. and so far I've found that the bottle opener won't work if you have a rear brake installed, the rear deraileur cable guide on the downtube was given a funky bend so it wouldn't obstruct the sticker, and the fork caps on my vanilla 125RLC stroke the frame. Its a medium frame and they really, really hit! But, they hit the beef-up plate at the head tube/down tube joint and not the down tube itself and after a couple of solid strokes, the offending portion of aluminum will wear away. I don't drink bottle beer, my rear deraileur still shifts fine, and I've never had anyone ride my bike over my face so I can't see the divot in the frame. I,m over the flaws and I still love this bike. I rode Tsali on Friday and learned that the thing will climb as advertised! So far the good far outweighs the bad. I,m nowhere near done brutilizing this thing but If I find a problem, I'll let Ya'll know. |
