Downhill/Freeride/Singletrackmobius

Ok i'm having lots of trouble picking a bike. I am on a budget of 800 dollars or so and would like a bike for singletrack trails around here (richmond, va.) they are flat, rooty. But i am going to go to JMU in the blue ridge mountains wher ei will be doing downhill biking also and some freeride on urban areas too. I was thinking a bighit entry level specialized 03 but i heard its heavy as crap. Otherwise i'm limited to hardtails mostly i believe i was thinking a fisher tassajara. Granted its not a big DH bike but i'm not going crazy like 30 foot drop downhill. I am real new to the sport and would like a decent strong bike i can upgrade. I am limited to pretty much Specialized, trek, fisher bikes at the dealer because i have a deposit on old bike but can only switch to a differnt bike. Thanks

I dont own one, but a Specialised P2 or P3 looks like a pretty good bet if you are going to be doing urban. if your budget is like 800, then go for a hardtail, it will make you a better rider (that was some good solid flamebait) because you wont get sloppy like you would with a squishy. the BH is a XC bike and wont hold up to much Urban or DH. This probably wasn't much help, but whatever.

Go with a 2002 Kona Stinky. 5 inches front and back suspension and rides really smooth. Up grade the stem and handlebars and headset cause there heavy as hell.
