Will this work on my XCE?(13 posts)

Will this work on my XCE?Edub
Mar 11, 2003 5:15 AM
I'm in the process of buying a heavier spring for my xce and I was wondering if this size will work: 700 x 1.57, 3-3/8" long

Thanks in advance

You will need a 700 x 1.83 fox spring if you have a Vanilla RC, you can get them from Fox for $24.95 us. Good luck!!!
Cool, thanks alot Dan-nmEdub

I weigh around 225 lbs with gear. I was told by Turner to use a 700 lb spring also. Well, now I'm confused as to what size to get. What is your riding style? I like to ride very aggressive singletrack with no more than 2' drops. I think I would rather have a stiffer spring for my style of riding. I may want to think about a 800 lb spring. do they make a 750 lb?

when i'm in shape, my style is aggressive but not super smooth. i bought a 800lb spring as fox recommended. i have not put it on the bike yet because i have not started building it up yet. i'm pretty sure they make a 750.

from everything i've read here it seems that turner shoots for a plusher ride with a softer spring and fox shoots for a stiffer spring.
i'm not sure how the 800 will work for me but that's what i will be starting with... i wonder if i'll get the proper sag tho?

I think I'm gonna go with an 800 lb spring also, I just called fox and they said the 800 would be perfect for me.

As for the sag, I think we should be able to get the proper amount. The Vanilla RC with a 2 inch stroke calls for 1/2" of sag. Turning the preload ring clockwise increases preload, which will decrease the sag, and counterclockwise decreases preload, which increases the sag. Kinda confusing.

Dou you think it will be ok to ride it with the 550 lb spring until I get the 800?

Running the light spring not a great idea...Tscheezy

If you turn the preload collar down enough that the shock does not feel like a total marshmallow, you will coil bind when you bottom and do bad things to your bike/shock. Alternately, if you ride with just a little preload the bike will feel like at total sponge. You will be fine cruising around on the road but I would not take it on a trail until you get it firmed up. The difference between 550 and 800 is huge, so it is not like you are only off by 50 or 100# and losing a little performance. I sent you an email regarding the 800#.

Post some pics (or maybe you already did- I'm losing track)!

I just replied to your e-mail....

Anyway, thanks for the advise tscheezy, I probably wasn't going to take it out anyway until I got a heavier spring. Actually, now that I think about it, that was a pretty stupid question!

I'll just tease myself and ride it around the neighborhood!!

700# for me at 225 pounds according to TurnerDanB
Mar 11, 2003 11:46 AM
I just got a 700# spring from Fox and the difference between a 550 and a 700 is HUGE, I hardly had to turn the preload adjuster to get the right sag, maybe 3/4 of a turn with the 700 pound spring. My thought is that the 800 pound spring will be too much, but then again I'm a newbie to the XCE, so maybe I'm completely off base. I did do one road ride on my 550 pound spring and I was amazed at how well it rode, I used two turns of the preload adjuster (because that is max recommendation) on the 550 pound spring because I knew I would be undersprung but again I was amazed at how well it rode even undersprung. Just my .02 cents. Good luck!!!

You may be right. I'm gonna trade my 550# spring for tscheezy's 800# spring because fox recommended the 800. But I may purchase a 700# just in case. I'm also new to the XCE and I am only going on what the people on here and at Turner and Fox have told me. Thanks for the advise
