| 15" XCE for 5'5" female rider? | Miles Mar 12, 2003 4:41 AM | | It looks like Supergo still has 15" XCE's for sale, so I'm contemplating picking one up for my wife as well (even though I'm yet to build mine up). She's 5'5" with pretty normal female proportions. I was planning on getting her an XS LocoMoto, which has similar measurements except for a half inch shorter top tube and perhaps more importantly an extra few inches of standover. Just wondering if anyone had similar experiences fitting a smaller rider on the 15" XCE. Thanks,
Miles |
| I sure hope so! | Kpicha Mar 12, 2003 4:52 AM | | I'm 5'4" and have a 15" XCE on the way. Actually, I talked to Casey at Turner about that and he said I should be fine on it. Only b/c I prefer to be stretched vs. cramped. I have a 30" inseam and am not worried about the standover. I think you're wife would be perfectly fine on it. I almost suspect the 15" bike was made for 5'5" riders.
I considered the XS Loco, too but the TT was going to be too short for me. I based that decision on the fact that I demoed a medium Santa Cruz Julian with 21.50 TT and although, at first it felt like a perfect fit but after 10 min. of riding, I found it to be way too tight.
I'll know for sure next week!

| XS Locomoto | MantraBuzz Mar 12, 2003 9:52 AM | | Wouldn't the XS Locomoto be way too small for a 5'5" rider? They say on the titus website that it is for someone who is under 5 ft!! I was assuming that a small Loco would be the right size for someone in the 5'5" range as it is suppposed to be equivalent to a 15" bike. Just some thoughts.....

| Anyone? Is the XS Loco too small for 5'5"? | Miles Mar 12, 2003 10:49 AM | | Basing my assumptions primarily on top tube lengths and my wife's strong preference for not being overly stretched out (my fault- her current bike has a very long tt), I thought the XS would be a good fit. The Loco's seem to have long top tubes- the 22.6" on the small certainly seemed too long. The only thing I saw on the Loco page at Titus said the XS could fit riders as petite as 4'11", not that it was necessarily made exclusively for that size. And in their Women's Fit section they say specifically that most women 5'5" and under will need a women specific frame (which their XS Loco is).
Interesting thought though, I wonder if anyone else has some insight into this?

| 15 inch turner (pic) | euthymic Mar 12, 2003 11:10 AM | | My girlfriend is about 5'4" (and of average proportions.Let me rephrase that in case she reads this.and of absolutely stunning proportions). Seriously, she has normal leg/torso length for someone this size and her 15 inch XCE fits great. She's using a relatively short stem (~60 I think) and 0 offset seatpost and really likes the fit. I imagine that if your wife doesn't like to be too stretched out she should have plenty of options.

| Cool; nice pom poms! What about standover height? | Miles Mar 12, 2003 11:43 AM | | Has the standover been an issue? That's my main concern at this point, since the top tube is only .5" longer. I guess she doesn't find the 60mm stem too short? I was probably going to use a 100mm, which is kind of long I guess, but 60mm seems pretty short.
Thanks for the info,
Miles
BTW- the frame in proportion to the wheels make it look like a 29er. Sweet ride. |
| 15 inch turner (pic) | Kpicha Mar 12, 2003 12:19 PM | | Cool, I'm also 5'4" and will probably use a 70 mm stem. I'm relieved to hear I won't be the only under 5'5" 15" XCE rider out there. |
| By the way, do you happen to know what the wheelbase is? (nm) | Kpicha Mar 12, 2003 12:23 PM | | |
| I'll measure it when I get off work (Pacific time). | euthymic Mar 12, 2003 1:15 PM | | nm |
| 41.5 inches and... | Euthymic Mar 12, 2003 4:44 PM | | I was way off on the stem. She is running a 90mm. (I guess everything looks small compared to my 130mm).
BTW, the fork (Psylo) was at 115mm for this measurment.
Hope you like your ride. |
| That's perfect!! | Kpicha Mar 12, 2003 6:27 PM | | Yeah, I was so hoping you would say 41.5. Hmm, maybe my 70 mm will be too small. Not that I'm complaining :)
Thanks for checking that measurement!!

| XS = 11" frame!! | MantraBuzz Mar 12, 2003 11:45 AM | | It is not just the TT you need to worry about. An XS Locomoto is equivalent to a 11" frame!?!? I would fear that at 5'5" on an 11" frame there would be way too much seat post and be too small. The stretched out feeling of the TT can always be compensated for a bit with a short stem and riser. These are again just my thoughts.....makes for an interesting conversation though!

| The XS XCE has a center to center of 12" | Tscheezy Mar 12, 2003 1:27 PM | | which is the same as the size small XCE. The only difference between the XS (15") and S (16.5") XCEs are the top tube length and how much the seat tube extends above the top tube. Because of the shock location, they cannot drop the top tube any lower on the Turners. I think this is also why the XS size was dropped from the 5-Spot lineup: the Romic shock on the 5-Spot is 1.5" longer than the XCE's shock, so to leave room for it they had to move the top tube up a little. The XS size would be pointless with a 31" standover height. They could have gone to a bent top tube or a LocoMoto/Pantera double triangle setup, but that is not the Turner style. The XCE is a great bike but probably not well suited for folks much under 5'4". Barny is on a size small and is 5'6", but likes a long tt.
The LocoMoto has the most generous standover you will find for the wee folk in a trail bike. And as far as seat posts go, the Thomson is quite strong and someone that small probably does not weigh that much. The minimum insertion recommendation is based on an average size rider, and probably is fairly conservative even then.

| A Balfa Belair has ample standover ;-) | CTRider Mar 12, 2003 2:09 PM | | but only two top tube lengths, but I just thought I'd throw that info out there for consideration. ;-) |
| That's precisely why I couldn't get a 5-Spot... | Kpicha Mar 12, 2003 6:35 PM | | thanks for the thorough write-up. I had that same discussion with Casey at Turner and he steered me away from the 5-Spot and suggested that if I really wanted a Turner, the XCE was going to be my only option besides an 02. I wanted at least 4" and the XS 02's weren't even going to be run until mid-April so, the XCE it is.
Oh by the way, the Hollowpoints also have tons of standover clearance ;-) (not that they're in the same category though)
Cheers,

| tschheezy! What kind of fenders are on that bike? | iride Mar 12, 2003 7:58 PM | | I need some. BTW, nice Turner, and where was that pic taken? Beautiful. |
| I like fenders... | Tscheezy Mar 12, 2003 8:36 PM | | The rear is a Headlands Backscratcher, the front is a SKS Shockboard. The rear fender is pretty much your basic light weight bolt on skunk-stripe stopper, and the front keeps the dreck out of your contacts. I live in a VERY wet place and had to come to terms with the geeky look of fenders for their sheer survival value. Now I am totally sold on them, but I do look forward to road trips to the desert when I can take them off. They are widely available.
The Backscratcher is pretty durable, but the mount on the Shockboard breaks easily in crashes, so I just drill a hole in the fender and run a bolt right through it to the expander in the steerer tube. I have yet to be able to break the front fender off again with this modification.
The picture was take at the red "X", Cliff Point, Kodiak, Alaska.
