Trek, Giant, Rocky Mtn? (4 posts)
| Trek, Giant, Rocky Mtn? | cityguy Mar 12, 2003 5:43 AM | | I'm about to make final decision between 3 bikes: Trek 4900, Giant Iguana, RM Fusion (all priced about the same where I am). All 3 fit very well, so I guess it comes down to overall quality/ride feel. Main use will be urban street/path, some (light) offroad. Just wondering if anyone out there had any thoughts?? e.g. Trek/Giant have better components, and Pilot C, whereas RM uses slightly lower-level components and (ugh) Judy TT BUT is its frame/wheelset a plus?? etc. etc. those kinds of questions. Anyone gone through this kind of decision/have any thoughts on this, on experience with the respective companies' customer service/support, I'd be glad to hear. Cheers. |
| One perspective | Flyer Mar 12, 2003 1:54 PM | | I have not owned a RM, but have owned both Trek and Giant. Both Trek and Giant, in the price range you are eyeing are fairly comparable to each other. Having said that, I own 2 bikes, a 2002 Giant NRS AIR and a 2003 Giant TCR Aero (road bike). What has impressed me about Giant is the warranty service. I had a friend crack a weld on a Giant NRS xtc (Hardtail Mountain Bike) and I drove him to the dealer, who called the factory while we stood there, and had a new frame shipped without them so much as wanting to see the old one before shipping. Now that is customer service! He had his new frame and the dealer transferred his components within 1 week. In the end, between the Trek and Giant you are looking at, and the kind of riding you say you will be doing, I don't think you could go wrong with either bike
I would avoid the RM only because of the fork (you are right, UGH), but again, given the type of riding you are going to do, it would do well also. |

As you say, the Trek/Giant pretty close, though the Iguana has, perhaps, a more sophisticated/upgradeable frame and (here) slightly better components. Problem with the RM is the low-end shifters (Acera)/fork; just have to decide if the frame/wheelset is worth it. Cheers. |

Iguana for 8 years the bike was indestructable, it never broke and
rarely needed tuning. I did some fairly abusive riding on the bike
as I got more into mountain biking,it never let me down! |
