| Final Verdict on the Iron Horse Hollowpoint? | Snowman Jun 10, 2003 8:58 PM | | I was planning on getting a Hollowpoint Team for XC epics & trailrides. However, they got a terrible review on MBA & are having problems with the shock hitting the seat tube when the suspension isn't set up correctly. Wondering if the new linkage for 04 will be the true DW-link. For the time being, I'm leaning towards building up a azonic propulsiom with a talasR. I wish that biike had an inch more travel. I know the saber is 5-6", but it is 9lb with a 69 deg head angle. I already have a bullit which is pretty similiar. I guess I'm looking for a reason to believe that the Hollowpoint will deliver a sweet ride. Any 03 owners want to convince me?
Thanks for any suggestions. |
| At the risk of sounding like a rep for Iron Horse... | næstep Jun 10, 2003 10:40 PM | | ...(or is that what you call a pimp?).
But rather than rant about MBA and wax on about my bike, I suggest you sit down with a brew or a cup of coffee (depending on what time of day you're reading this) and do a thorough search here in the Techtalk archives and reviews section (check out the '02.5 reviews which use the same linkage), and over at Ridemonkey and at hcor.net in their forums, and you'll come away with a very accurate picture of what this bike is all about.
You can quickly dismiss a magazine review that up front admits to overpressurizing the rear shock by at least 50%, and ignore their dw-link comments and instead focus on how the bike performs. Oops, there I go again...
The frame clearance issue and the dented seat tubes are unfortunate, damn near inexcusable from a QC standpoint, but those who are affected still seem to be enjoying their bikes (you'll run into a couple of 'em over on Ridemonkey). Iron Horse seems to have stepped up to the plate though with a modified linkage and warranty frames, or at least they're promising, and the linkages are due right around now.
As for me, I'm not affected by the clearance issue, I've got my shock set up correctly to about 30psi over rider weight and 30% sag, and I'm enjoying the hell out of this bike. I wouldn't let the MBA guys scare you off if this is the type of ride you're looking for.

MBA misquoted DW. Only a tiny percentage of HP's are "bad."
IH has the new linkage plates available now for free to any HP owner.
MBA is a POS mag, for the most part. |
| I was interested in one until I saw the lack of tire clearance.. | CraigH Jun 11, 2003 11:41 AM | | Someone either here or over on RideMonkey posted pics showing just how tight it is.
Since I ride in a rain forest, I need the mud clearance.
Apparently the Blur has the same issue. |
| Yep, that were I... | næstep Jun 11, 2003 4:12 PM | | The stock UST Larsen TT 2.0 tire leaves scant millimeters of clearance.
The 2.1" Fire XC Pro and the Conti Traction Pro 2.0 both open up clearance by a considerable amount, but definitely not enough for clay-like mud buildup.

| Tyre clearance is poor, but stock rubber is high profile | gorse Jun 14, 2003 6:09 AM | | 2.1 Michelin Wildgripper UST tyres have 3-4mm more clearance than the 2.0 Larsens. Being in our winter, I've ridden some very sticky stuff without an issue, whereas the clearance with the Larsens was just too small.
Great ride though, would buy it again. IH are customer-service oriented and have the frame build fault sorted. |
