What were the brakes that came stock? I'm looking at HFX-9 in my LBS. I tried them around the parking lot and yes, they weren't broken-in, but still, when I got my Grimecas they were waaay better. I never rode with Hayes, but I think I'll try to pick up a bike from someone for a day-two and test them really good. How heavy are you? Do you think that there is enough power for you?
Thanks, Igor
The Hayes I got I think are the mags-HFX-Mag XC . I bought them used) they have the 160mm rotors, and the removable mounting plate for the handlebars so you can just slip them right into place with out moving your shifters and grips. The pads I have are the Sintered-Metallic Disc Brake Pads they work alot better than the semi metalic but take a bit of break in time. they work great! TONS of Stopping power.
I weigh 175-180 and the bike is around 30 or so.
Aside from bleeding them when I first got them they have worked great. I also had to clean the pads a bit with some iso prop alcohol
and scuff the pads a bit with some sand paper as they leaked all over in the shipping process. after the intial set up I haven't touched them.
It fact they work so well I had to go upgrade with discs on my old bike because my old XT V brakes felt so weak after riding my hayes.
Email me if you have any other questions
