I have a vanilla 125 on backorder, but am seriously considering a marz z1 fr instead. Any thoughts for a Turner 5 spot (also on backorder)?

Go with the Marzocchi Z1 FR. I have a 5-Spot. I originally had the Fox Vanilla 125 RLC. It worked failrly well. Made a lot of noise during climbs and has some controls poorly located. The lockout only locks in full extension. The compression setting changes every time you lock the fork out. There was also some oil seepage onto the stancions. That fork would be really good with some re-design.

THe Z1 FR simply works better. It's even plusher than the Fox. The ETA is GREAT! It locks down (about 1.5 - 2 inches lower) and still has about 30-40mm of travel. It makes climbing a joy. Even though the Fox fork is stiff...the Z1 is even stiffer....superb.

A buddy of mine just got his 5-Spot with the Fox. After riding my bike with the Z1, he decided to change to the Z1, too.

The Z1-FR or SL should work well -- very stiff and plush... a solid performer with good life expectancy.

If you want a lighter fork up front, a Fox TALAS would also be viable if you're 150+ lbs (its dampers can feel harsh for lighter riders, but it is plenty stiff as well). No clunking on my TALAS RLC yet =) Just another option.

I'm specing mine with a fox vanilla. Here's my logic (take it or leave it):
Z1 FR is a freeride fork. 5 Spot is a trail bike. RFX with 5" rockers a better match for z-1. Seems overkill for the 5 Spot.

Z1 makes the HT angle 68 instead of an already slack 69 for a trail bike. Frame designed around 19.5" fork (fox), not 20.4" (z-1)

I'm a big guy, 6'2+ & ~220Lbs (actively dieting down from 235, headed for 210)

JMO:

I like to ride hard, and don't have time or patience for sensitive weight-weenie lovin' 150lb rider spec'd BS. Forks take a beating, have a butload of moving parts that are under extreme pressure, and your steering and possibly your life can depend on them.

That said, overkill is my name and I ordered a Z1QR20 for my 5S. The way I see it is:

a)I don't need to take my wheel off to rack my bike, and I don't *plan* on changing flats too often. Hell I'm riding tubless anyway so if I flat, it's still going to take time to fix it, if at all.

b)the 5S is built for a 5" fork so it shouldn't be too slow in steering, slower than the Fox? maybe. I'd like to get info on how they measured the HA, I believe them but I'd love to do it myself.

c) Several calls to 'Zokes, multiple sales people asserted the QR20 is about the same weight as the standard Z1, b/c of the savings on the hub, and the minimal hw the QR20 adds. True? I have no Idea.

d)Stiff Stiff Stiff, I rode a noodly Judy XC and Mag-21 on my other bike, and when I went to a Zoke Marathon ETA it was a real eye opener.

e)NOTHING kicks ass like the ETA feature. It dosen't just bring the fork down to minimal travel, no! it comes down progressively depending how hard you lean on the bars/ that is to say the steeper the hill the more the fork drops, and it always maintains 30mm travel. It's a climber's dream. One flip, its on, one flip it's off and the fork pops up to full travel.

Do I need to say how tough they are?

I have not received my build yet, But I do ride their Marathon and if their $260 fork is that good and that friggin' Bombproof (it is, trust me, it is) then I figure their Z1 will be even more so.
