What's up with Mark Weir's bike?sdbullock

I thought my Chameleon was confused, what with its xc rims, hubs, tires, etc, and a Z1...but this guy takes the cake. I clicked the link at the top of MTBR's homepage (something about "see what Weir rides" on WTB's website)--yeah for advertising!-- and the next thing i see is an Ellsworth Dare (correct me if i'm wrong--8" travel?) with a Float (!) on the front, 8" Hayes, and all sorts of other xc-ish equipment. I thought he was an ss-er, for starters, and knew he was a winner regardless of what he rides, but what is this bike for? And why would he ever ride it instead of his Jericho (aside from DHing, which this bike still doesnt look suited for)?

For d-ville, there are no big drops, but it is rocky and IS
mostly down hill. That frame, w/ air shock, can't weigh
THAT much. Don't need anywhere near as strong(heavy)bits
when you have lots-o-travel to soak up impacts, so you can
run light rims and tires, etc, AND not beat yourself up
bouncing down the rocky parts and still not have that much weight
to drag up the hill from the bridge to third divide. Horses for
courses, I guess. (and having watched him ride, it prob'ly doesn't
matter what he rides)

Like you and the Chameleon, long travel bikes with light bits make
an awful lot of sense in the right places. My gemini weighs 30lbs
1 ounce and goes up hill pretty well, and sure goes back down the
other side a lot faster than my xce. With a 125 vanilla and 170mm
of vanilla propedal in back, its the most fun I've had in 20 years of mtb'n.

How do you like the Vanilla ProPedal? I imgine the ride is pretty plush to begin with, what with the 170mm of travel and everything; but do you think the ProPedal takes anything away from the small bump sensitivity? And does it really make the ~6 1/2" more manageable going uphill, etc?
