99 Rockhopper or old Trek 990, Please help have to make a decision by Sunday nightScreamin Eagle

I want to get a real bike that I will be able to upgrade. So basically I am looking for a good frame that I can ride in the meantime and then build up. Out of these two which would you prefer to buy

99 Specialized Rockhopper
or an older Trek 990 Steel Frame

The trek has a rigid fork (but steel frame so it does give a little) and the Rockhopper has a Manitou Magnum Fork. I can get either one for about the same price and I have heard that both of these bikes are worth the asking price just to get the frames. Both have Deore components. That is about all that I know other than the 990 was a very expensive steel frame bike when new (1200+) and the rockhopper is around 500 new. Any suggestions? I would like to get this bike by the end of the weekend.

Oh yeah by the way, both of these bikes are in good condition. They are both able to be riden so I am not just buying the frame.
