I have friends that have the Scalpel and they have had different problems with them, nothing major but still problems. I have not taken one of there for a ride so I am just second hand viewing. On the other hand I have rode the Racer X and it is a dream bike. My budies say when they have a promblem with the Cannondale bikes they get the run around from the shop and almost impossiable to get in touch with Cannondale. I had a question about a titus bike so I e-mailed them and the VP called me the next day. Now that is service. Hope this helps.
Sounds like a bad LBSFett

I have a Scalpel and have no problems, but my LBS is great. I think a person's experience alot of times is based upon how good the LBS is rather than the actual bicycle. Both bikes are top shelf XC race bikes that would serve you well. Ride both and get the one that fits you best. If neither fits you, you can always go custom with a Ti Racer X.

One thing about the Scalpel is that there is not a fork in the 3 lb range that can touch the Carbon Lefty fork stiffness and tracking, especially with 4 inches of travel, but the downside is the propreitary nature of the fork (limited choices of hubs, etc)
