| What flat pedals? | sdbullock Sep 22, 2003 6:53 PM | | I hate to say it, but i'm looking seriously at getting some flat pedals. Shamefully enough, i havent ridden a pair since i was a kid, and dont know what makes a good one. Lately i've been doing a lot of short commutes that take me a) across campus or b) through a construction site to work (at a bookstore on the other side!), which of course involves a lot of riding off of stuff and general screwing around...i've been doing this on the 'platforms' of my 545s, and my shins have taken a beating. While commutes will be the primary use, i'd really like to be able to ride some technical xc on them, too, if only for the experience.
Any suggestions for a durable-but-not-too-heavy-or-expensive flat pedal? Shoes will always be good skate shoes or ascent boots (super low-cut hikers). Bike is ss Chameleon/Z1. Thanks! |
| Shimano mx30 flats | Nightrider Sep 22, 2003 8:40 PM | | As soon as I started riding more stunts & ladders it was obvious that the Speedplay Frogs weren't going cut it. I Switched to a pair of Shimano mx30 bmx/mountain platforms and grew to love them.
The pedals come with short pins installed but come with a set of long pins as well for added grip. I like the long pins more but must caution you to get yourself a pair of shinpads for technical dirt riding, one good pedal slam in the shins and you will quickly agree, save yourself the trouble and include shinpads in your purchase. The pair weigh in at 492 grams, that might sound like alot but check out some other flat pedal weights and its not that bad. The only lighter flats that I know of are the Tiogas but its only by 20 grams a pair and I found the feel & shape of the shimano's to be far superior.
HAPPY TRAILS!! |
| re: What flat pedals? | BK Sep 23, 2003 5:54 AM | | Try some Cully's or Flatboys. They are made by Easton and are very rugged/durable. Weight is listed as 578 and 550 grams respectively (at least according to Speedgoat). Not the lightest pedals on earth, but if you are looking for platforms, there are not too many light ones. I use them for everything, since I dont use clipless pedals at all. Watch your shins (and calf muscles) though because they will draw blood. Actually, any platforms with pins are gonna draw blood, I think. But they are nice pedals and work well with soft soled skate shoes a la Vans.

| Sun ZUZU | EricTheRed Sep 23, 2003 9:22 AM | | Sun Zuzu or some Welgo pedals that look simialr are great, and cheap, i've been running them for about 3 years now for everything from commuting in the snow to trials and dj, should be able to find some for less than $30. use the rest of the dough to get some shin pads for messing around, also cheap go to a moto cross store, shouldn't cost more than $20. Oh, and don't be ashamed of going to flats they are fun and will help you improve different parts of your riding. |
| Believe it or not - Weyless..... | Mackie Sep 23, 2003 10:08 AM | | Look at the magnesium Weyless pedals at Supergo - pretty cheap & really light.
If you prefer, get the Wellgo Mag1's from Jenson - same exact pedal for about the same cash. |
| I'll second the Weyless/Wellgo recommendation... | Gill-Again Sep 24, 2003 11:28 AM | | I have the Wellgo MG-1 pedals on ALL of my bikes. They are great for traction and are the lightest platform pedal out there.
I think they are the exact same pedal weyless sells.
One word of caution when installing the pins, use locktite. The pins WILL come loose without it. |
| Got some 'Mosh' from my lbs... | sdbullock Sep 23, 2003 1:51 PM | | for $30, and they seem like they'll do the trick. The dick at the lbs, however, assured me that they were sealed bearings only, no bushings. Got home, took them apart to put the right load on the bearings (they were super-tight when i bought them), and whaddyaknow? One small sealed bearing, and one, fat load-bearing bushing. Kind of a bummer, but they're still not going to see much trail use, so i'm not worried about durability. I feel already (one hour's riding) that i waste too much energy on CO's steeps here without cleats, and i need all i can get on an SS.
Thanks for the suggestions, though. If i was willing to spend a bill on flats (Cully's, Shimano MX), however, I would have gotten Mallet Cs! |
