| women specific bikes | NE_Rider Sep 24, 2003 6:13 AM | | Anyone have suggestions regarding frames/bikes for women? I've seen Trek's Fuel; and hardtail models, also saw an ad for the new superlight. Not sure who else makes similar bikes.
Also, are the geometry's really different on these frames, or do they simply come equipped with women specific components, i.e. saddle, stem, etc.?
Rider is a teenager, and we mostly ride on single track in the NE; rocks, roots, twisty windy single track, etc.
Thanks in advance for any info.

| Here's a few... | The Squeaky Wheel Sep 24, 2003 6:52 AM | | Check out the Santa Cruz Juliana. I also think Titus makes the Racer-X and maybe even the Loco-moto in small women's sizes.
All are excellent bikes.

| re: women specific bikes | Mtnattackr Sep 24, 2003 8:13 AM | | Specialized now also makes a wide range of womens bikes - FSRs and even a womens epic!
Yes,womens bicycles have different geometry - shorter top tubes and usually more standover clearence. Shorter stems are put on b/c of the shorter reach, womens specific saddles (shorter in length but slightly wider), grips sometimes etc. |
| generally speaking | JimC. Sep 24, 2003 8:51 AM | | ladies have longer legs and shorter torsos. Men have the reverse *generally*.
Some mfrs. make bikes with frames that have a reduced top tube length and in the case of Juliana, even the handlebar grips are 28% smaller for those ladies' hands.
but it all comes down to fit, the bike's gotta fit.
You could read up a bit at http://www.coloradocyclist.com/bikefit/ or at wrenchscience.com for better understanding of your teenager. A wrong fit is like having the wrong size shoes...painful, and a waste of $.
Good luck, Jim |
| Thank you! | NE_Rider Sep 24, 2003 12:05 PM | | This is a great list to start with. Thanks!
The bike is a b-day gift for my daughter, and hopefully further continuation of something we enjoy doing together now. |
| Detailed Womens Fit Anlysis At Titus web | HoJo Sep 24, 2003 7:20 PM | | My wife is 5-0 and Titus has been her MTB Savior. Titus was one of the first bike mfg to make a real women's specific bike and they are still the only company to offer full FS for the petite. Go look at this Titus link for an in depth analysis of womens bike needs http://www.titusti.com/techtalk_frmset.html. Unfortunatly my wife went through numerous MTB's that are just smaller versions of my bikes before we realized there is more to women's bike fit than smaller grips, cranks, on a shortened men's frame. The angles all have to change when a bike gets significantly smaller, women bend differently at the hip and their fermurs are shorter for their inseam than men. We spend a few hours being enlighted by Chris Cocalis, the owner of Titus, when my wife bought her first Titus RacerX in 1998. I think he knows more about women's bike fit than anyone I have talked to in the industry. Any-how read his thoughts even if you don't want a Titus.
Good luck with your search..

| Great read... | NE_Rider Sep 24, 2003 8:00 PM | | ...after looking around the site, I found the Racer-x in a xx-small. Is this the frame to which you are referring?
Thanks again for the article! |
| Great read... | HoJo Sep 25, 2003 6:05 AM | | Yep. Fortunately for me my wife is a bit of an MTB fanatic and has an XXS RacerX and a XS Locomoto. (this way she never complains when I upgrade bikes) The RacerX fits her better and is more racy, but for more technical terrain she loves the 4" up front and 4 3/4" Loco she has named Squishy. You did not mention your price point or how tall the rider in question is, but if a Titus fits your needs you might give Charles Coker of Hammerhead Bikes a call @ 512-331-2002. Charles has set my family and friends up with numerous bikes, including my wife's two Titus (what is plural for Titus?). I know a few months ago he had a used XXS racerX for sale....
