| cool tidy x-cell | derby Jan 10, 2004 9:18 AM | | The X-CELL looks stout enough for any huck and plenty of stand-over for those necessary dabs.
The AXL would be heavier and doesn't have all the trick upgrades of the X-Cell, but it looks like it costs much less too. Be sure the bike fits you so go to a dealer and see if you can fit the 26 inch wheeled size, the 24 incher will be lighter and have more stand-over, but at age 13 you could grow out of it in 6 months.
I'm not very familiar with trials bikes. Do your research (I guess you are since you are posting here on mtbr.)
The x-cell seems like a lot of bike for the money made with quality aluminum, stiff upside down fork, disc brake, 20mm axle QR front hub and 2.35in tires.
In competition, preparation and knowing the course is everything. Sounds like your going to be a winner. Ride your own race.

| I'm too big and crashing hurts too much! | derby Jan 11, 2004 9:34 AM | | I was just comparing quality between the 2 bikes you listed. I only watched trials and I don't think Saracen bikes are sold in the US where I live. I'm old and crashing hurts much more now I just cruise through wilderness singletracks now. I ride an Intense Tracer 4 inch travel fullie.
Seems like for trials riding you'd need a frame that is light and strong and has plenty of stand-over and clearance for big tires and wide rims that you could run at very low pressure. It looked like the X-Cell fit those qualifications in your price limit and it had a lot of good feartures for heavy duty freerding and jumps. The upside-down fork may be heavier than an old style. And for trials don't you want a light strong rigid fork? Saracen web site lists the X-Cell as a duel-slalom design. Maybe you could remove the fork top caps and get to the springs easily to replace the springs with light weight plastic pipe when you use it for trials and need a rigid fork.
I haven't heard any talk about trials riding on this forum. I think you should spend some time this winter researching and test riding bikes in the parking lot to see what fits you best. And go to a trials event and see what type of bike the top riders are riding and ask them for opinions too.
