| Honestly, IMO don't buy a 5spot | Bulldog Jan 11, 2004 7:08 AM | | You're gonna kill it with stair drops and dirt jumps and the like. You should search around for a '01 or '02 RFX instead. Same suspension, same quality, just a lot burlier and designed for that type of abuse. If you need to buy a brand new frame, Azonic Saber or Craftworks FRM125 are built to handle more punishment than the 5spot. Devinci has a all-mountain bike too. The RFX will be the burliest of them all though. I have one, and use if for a lot of aggressive trail riding. But I'm heavier and I like to DJ/DH/DS/FR on occasion, so I accept the weight penalty for the added strength of the frame and the confidence that gives me. |
| don't crash when jumping | derby Jan 11, 2004 9:06 AM | | Turner has reduced the strength to travel ratio on this lighter designed XC version of the RFX freeride bike. For small dirt jumps Moab step drops (6 inch to 3 foot) you'd be fine as long as you don't make a mistake and stuff the front wheel tweaking the head or down tube or biff sideways and crash land twisting the frame or links sideways. There's not much extra metal reinforcing the bike to survive mistakes. It would be a great bike in Moab, it's a steep-seat-tube seated smoother trail climber design, maybe slide the seat back for better step up ease in more technical less climbing rides like Moab.
Also unless you don't mind a lot of pedal bob or slow overall damping for stability, you should get a ProPedal Vanilla-R for the 5-Spot (you won't use the lockout with a platform shock), or better yet a Romic or Manitou Swinger-4 platform damped shock for faster damping except where needed for pedaling efficency.
Nice bike! It should work great climbing in Telluride with a platform shock.

| agreed | FM or MF Jan 11, 2004 11:41 AM | | I was shopping, went back and forth, and finally decided on an RFX. I wanted a bike I can "grow into", since I ride up in BC in the summers. There are a few available right now, look in the classifieds and also comtact RFXR about his. So, my RFX is on the way.
Turner says the 5-spot uses the lightest weight tubeset he's ever worked with. The RFX has very similar geometry (especially with 5" rockers) but weighs 2 lbs more so you are NEVER going to break it. Plus you have the option of going 6", dual crown, or even 7" in back in the future.
Both are great bikes; for me it came down to this: I'm willing to climb a little slower (but not less) in order to have a bike that can handle the north shore or whistler. And, it's pretty obvious already that 2-3lbs doesn't really make a big difference when climbing, unless you race. |
| yo | RFXR Jan 11, 2004 1:31 PM | | Like they all say, sounds like an RFX is for you. I ride one and love it but its for sale. Im selling it to buy myself an 04 DHR, and a highline will come in summer. My RFX just got a $175 paintjob and is like brand new. Its got some custom linkage plates that give it 7in rear travel via a 2 week old used once 5th element. If you notice more rear travel on a trailbike is becoming the new trend (foes inferno) I had my RFX set up with a super T and it was great. but i also sold a set of linkages to a local who had the bike set up with an 03 DJ1, he had fairly light parts and the bike felt great on trails, even with his old Vanilla RC. 7in of travel controled on by a 5th will feel better than 5in by a Van RC anyday. im selling mine for $1300 frame only email me at RFXR@sbcglobal.net if you are interested.
