Tomac 98 Comp or Specialized Enduro(7 posts)

Tomac 98 Comp or Specialized EnduroBill Messick

I'm looking at the 2003 closeouts and can get great deals for both the Tomac 98 Comp and Specialized Enduro. I weigh 225 pounds and want to be able to do some climbing, down hilling and cross country. The Tomcac has lockouts on the suspension which I thought might give it an edge, but I hear the Enduro is more sturdy. I'd like to hear some recommendations.

The Tomac is good cross country and climbing 5.5lb frame. Not for downhilling especially at 225lbs. The Tomac bike similar to the Enduro would be the Six Shooter. ( The Six Shooter would need a platform shock, new handlebar, and new stem imho. Can be had for a similar price on ebay or possibly bikefarmer.com If you are interested be carefull on sizing - big top tubes). For more information on tomac search this board - poser tomac.

The Enduro sounds more like your bike than the 98. I have ridden with a couple people who had them, they were excellent riders and the bike performed.

Good Luck

One more bike that caught my eye was the Kona Dawg. How would that stack up to the Enduro?

Thanks,
Bill

Tomac 98- Cross Country Bike, not a Downhill bike. Faux 4 bar.

Kona Dawg- Strong All mountain 4 inch bike, 30 pounds, Faux 4 Bar.

Specialized Enduro- All mountain 5 inch rear travel bike, 30 pounds, true Horst link 4 bar. The 2003 base Enduro was a great deal, strong, reasonable weight, and very inexpensive for what you got. I would pick this one.

I just bought the '03 Enduro on clear-out for $1049 USD, my main ride is a Bullit, but the Enduro has exceeded my expectations for a great bike.

so far all's well, except I had to face the disc tabs, the frame was way out and so was the Marz. fork, but that's true of just about all bikes unless you get really expensive. The Deore brakes love to howl but I caution the bike is still very new and I gotta emery paper the disc pads yet to see if that helps.

4.75 rear w itch switch and 4" front on the Marz. air fork.

IMHO you simply can't beat this as a value. Lifetime frame warranty too. I'd have loved a Turner, but at this price I can have 3 Enduros.

$1049 is a great deal. Supergo has quite a few on clearance for $1199 by my house. I think the Enduro Comp is $1399. What does the extra $200 buy? Also, do you notice much bob on the Enduro? I was looking for something with a lockout but not sure how much it would be needed with the Enduro.

The extra $200 gets you a bit better spec, I'm not sure what though, check the website (I'm in Canada and the models vary from American ones sometimes). There is slight bob but not enough to cause an issue for me, BUT, I'm riding rougher terrain in BC Canada and bob means nothing...I'm in no race.

In terms of lockout, the Fox Shock on the Enduro has an "itch switch"
that allows you to shorten travel (riding) on the bike from 4.75" to 3 something inches. With lots of air in the shock and proper damping set, the bob should be minimal for you. Do NOT over damp, you'll blow the seals.

Hope that helps a bit, Jim
