To stumpjump or not to stumpjump...that is the question....?Dodo

Hi, i'm looking at getting a new mountain bike, and i was looking at the hardtail stumpjumper. At the LBS, i could get it at $1000, which seems like a good deal. I was thinking though at this price...should i look for something with disc brakes? What would be a comparable bike to the stumpjumper? I would really appreciate any opinions :) thanks

To disc or not to disc,..that is your question? Remember that for a comparably-priced bike to be equiped with decent disc means skimping on other components.
Outline your priorities when comparing bikes on the same price range. Frame, fork and wheelsets (disc-ready?) for me are the primary concern. The rest of the parts you can upgrade without too much money.
I agree with that older guy, but don't ask me to quote Shakespear...Bikeless Rider

...that's one type of reading I just didn't get in school, more of a tech manual guy.
You really have to consider as OG said, you're not only going to get lesser components if you go $1000 disc bike, the brakes themselves, the one thing you wanted to "upgrade" to, will probably suck at that price range, Shimano Deores being the exception. I think it's better to find a truly disc ready bike ie: one that has the tabs AND the hubs, and pick out some nice brakes when you can afford them. This type of bike has slowly become less common, maybe because people were seeing that the heavy style XT disc hubs were being replaced with lighter ones. Now that the XT Centerlocks are out, more bikes like this may be available.

Owned two of um back in the day. Not very forgiving but stiff and responsive. They also work well with a 100mm fork too. Buy it and ride it with v's and then make the disc upgrade later. You get a better quality wheelset and brake system instead of that which youll find at the 1K price point.
