| Are UST tires compatible with standard rims? | Echo Jun 4, 2002 10:48 AM | | Before you say "sure UST tires fit on standar rims". I am looking to find out if a UST tire, in particular the bead, is by design able to fit a standard tire.
Mavic states that the UST rim is designed for both UST tires and standard tires (see below) but I'm looking for the opposite. If a UST tire is backwards compatible to a standard rim.
Go to Mavic's web site (http://www.mavic.com/servlet/srt/mavic/vtt-tech?lg=uk), at the bottom of the page you will find the following statment:
"Mounting tube type tyres on UST Tubeless wheels
The UST norm has been validated by the European Tyre and Rim Technical Organisation (ETRTO) committee. By now, it is possible to mount tube type tires on UST Tubeless wheels if necessary. This option is authorised but eliminate all the advantages of the Tubeless system which provide better traction, less flats and better performance. With a tube, the use of rim tape is useless because the upper bridge of the profile is not drilled for spoke's nipples thanks to our Fore concept."
Thanks! |
| UST tires OK on tube-rims | 34x20 Jun 10, 2002 4:13 PM | | You may find something worthwhile at [Stan's] www.notubes.com. I have been racing with UST Pythons, without tubes, on my tube-style rims for a month or so.
I'm using a mix of sealant from Stan and "Slime for Tubless Tires" mixed about 1:4, [Stan:Slime] 5 oz total. The system might work fine without the Stan's liquid - I didn't have the confidence to try it, yet. I taped my rims a la Stan, and use Schraeder valve stems, drilled out a bit at the base, to allow Slime to pass through.
All systems go - 4 or 5 psi leakdown after 3 weeks.
