| Plug for Spokey | Matno Jun 5, 2002 3:26 AM | | Just got a Spokey spoke wrench (the red one) and it is AWESOME! How did I live without this thing? No wonder my nipples were getting rounded with my old piece of junk multi-gauge spoke wrench. I thought all spoke wrenches were created equal. THEY'RE NOT!!! (And the Spokey was only $3.95 from Nashbar!)
Can't wait to build up my new wheels... |
| Spokey should sponser this forum (or already does, informally) | Seb Jun 5, 2002 5:31 AM | | I'd bet almost everybody already owns one, so I guess they would not have much to gain. Spokey is pretty much all you see mechs in bike shops using. Maybe a dedicated pro wheelbuilder uses some super deluxe model (Sheldon Brown likes the $50 DT wrench), but I haven't heard anybody snub the spokey, ever. |
| Every shop I know uses the Park (nm) | shiggy Jun 5, 2002 8:40 AM | | |
| Well, I don't own one | jw25 Jun 5, 2002 12:23 PM | | (I've got 3 Parks, though). They've been good to me, but I spose, for $4, I'll end up with a Spokey at some point. |
| I have always used Park (single size) spoke wrenches | shiggy Jun 5, 2002 8:38 AM | | They have always fit great, are easy to use and the open handle lets me hang them on the truing stand.

| Green or Black? | Matt Jun 6, 2002 12:23 PM | | I've had a green Park spoke wrench for several years. I've only used it for minor adjustments, but it appears the black one might be the right size for the most common nipple sizes. Then again, the green one is not much bigger. Have I been using the wrong size? No rounding so far.
I got plans to build my first wheel and just ordered a black one anyway, to be safe. Still curious about the green.

| The black one has fit all of my nipples except... | shiggy Jun 6, 2002 2:28 PM | | ...for the ones on the Kona Humu Humu Nuku Nuku Apua'a (sp?) I just bought used. It needed the red one.
My other wheels have all used DT or Sapim 14 and 15 gauge nipples, alloy and brass and the black fits perfectly. Almost hard to get it on sometimes. |
| Green or Black? | TRIPLE THREAT Jun 10, 2002 3:20 PM | | GREEN SPOKE WRENCHES WERE POPULAR FOR OLD 60'S AND 70'S SCHWINN BIKES. THEY WERE JUST SLIGHTLY LARGER THAN THE BLACK WRENCH. THE GREEN FIT OLDER NON STAINLESS STEEL SPOKE'S NIPPLES AND THE BLACK WERE MADE TO FIT THE NIPPLES OF BETTER QUALITY SPOKES. |
| I like them too | Louie Jun 5, 2002 1:02 PM | | I've always used the Park spoke wrenches myself but picked up a Spokey a few weeks ago. I must agree -- they are awesome.
I'll still use the Park spoke wrenches for getting started on a new wheel, with the open end, they are easier to get onto the nipple (not by much, but it is faster initially). Once it starts to get up to tension, I'll bust out the Spokey. And of course if I am truing a wheel... it's the Spokey, no question.
They have a little hole in them so they can hang on your pegboard next to your traditional spoke wrenches as well.
I'd recommend them too -- not so important for the initial build, but for any retrue-ing... or semi crusty wheels... absolutely! Rounding off a nipple is no fun. |
