285 or 287(3 posts)

285 or 287Matt

Spocalc tells me I need 285.8 mm spokes. The spokes I want come in 285 or 287. Which should I get? Does it matter?

First wheel build so I don't know how much wiggle room there is.

My thought is 285 is closer, but is it better to err on the long side?

Thanks.

the length it gives is measured from the top of the spoke nipple. I've built 3 sets of wheels using lengths from Spocalc, and all 3 have 1mm or less between the end of the spoke and end of the nipple, after final tensioning and truing.
So, I'd get the 285s in a heartbeat. Having some spoke sticking out of the nipple isn't always bad, but it could limit the tension you could achieve, and possibly casue tube problems.
As for the build, take your time and true and tension in small steps. There's nothing quite like the first ride on a wheel you built.
Thanks..Matt

I appreciate the information. I'm really excited to try this.
