| King Disc Hub Upgrade Questions? | Jaybo Jun 7, 2002 12:32 PM | | I have a King classic wheelset laced with DB14/15 DT spokes with Mavic 217's. Anyway, I want to go disc w/ Avid Mechanicals; however, I don't want to spend $500 to do it. However, I want to keep my King hubs. Has anyone done the upgrade themselves without paying King to do it? How tough is it? Is the upgrade as good as their new disc hubs? Could I lace my 217's back on despite the fact they are a quarter worn out on the sidewalls? I could lace tubeless rims, but I don't know how to build them. I know how to lace up standard wheels (and love doing it). Are the disc rims worth it?
Thanks,

| I've upgraded from non disc to disc.... | Rwe Jun 7, 2002 1:21 PM | | the hub shell from King(disc)were approximately $45 each. You also need the King tool to swap the internals. The swap wasn't hard if you follow the instructions ,the tool is easy to use.The upgrade IS YOUR King internal parts installed into the disc hubshell from King.As far as your other questions about the rims maybe someone else could tell you if your 217 would be worth saving and there is a good possibility you will need to replace your spokes due to the different size hub flange.I replaced my 517s with Sun Ds1-xc rims and they have held up well and weren't real expensive. These are disc specfic rims, are they worth it? I'd say yes but not necessary if you're trying to save a few bucks and your 217s are worth saving. |
