Sun Mammoth: the wheel valve opening is slicing my tubeG Man

I think I am missing an obvious answer here but I just got this as a rear wheel. My inner tube's valve come up through the wheel tube valve hole and the tube valve is not that snug against the wheel valve hole. So when I go to pump it up, the tube valve rubs up against the 2 rim walls and slices the tube valve at the base of the tube valve, just before the metal part.

I'm going to go look for something like a rubber washer to line the wheel valve hole but was wondering if this is a common problem. Do I need different tubes...I was using a lighter cross country bontrager rear wheel before this. Thanks

Sounds like your tube is Presta, but your wheel is drilled for Schrader valves. Both tube types are widely available, and neither has an overwhelming advantage.

Presta - http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_p.html#presta
Schrader- http://www.sheldonbrown.com/gloss_sa-o.html#schraeder

Thanks everybody. I think my wheel is drilled for schraeder. I also thin the tube I had on before was a bit crappy. I have some new balckburn prestas now and the metal valve is longer. Also, I went to home depot and bought some small rubber screw caps (they are the rubber caps you put in the end of screws when you don't want them to scratch you)and cut a hole in the top of them and stuck them into my wheel valve hole and now it lines the valve hole when a presta tube is in there.

when looking at the valv e hole from the rim tape side?

If so: Cut a small piece of rim tape, 5cm. Cut a small hole that barely fits over the valve. Stick this to the rim over the valve hole. This should protect your stem.

If not: hell I don't know.

If you have presta valves, and the rim's NOT drilled for schrader, you can thread a presta nut on before putting the tube in the rim. I had to do this with 2 Bontrager Mustang rims that had slightly oversize valve holes.
If the valve hole's very oversize, though, it sounds like either need schrader tubes, or need to pad the valve stems somehow. Maybe slice an "x" in the middle of a patch, and fit it over the stem?

Thanks! See my reply above. I found a screw cap at home depot that does the trick.
