2 Cross/3 Cross Wheel Building ProblemTFerguson

I'm building my first multi-cross wheel set and have run into a snag. It's a rear, non-disc with 3-cross drive and 2-cross non. I have the different spoke lengths with the drive side 3-cross about 5mm longer than the non side. I just finished lacing the wheel and started tightening the spokes. The drive side pulling spokes and the non-drive side braking (if it were disc) are very tight and the other 16 are still very loose. I've checked all of the spoke lengths and the lacing. I am using the standard Brandt "The Bicycle Wheel" building method. Where am I going wrong?

non-disc, geared. Works very well.

A 5mm difference sounds like too much. Mine would usually be 2-3mm shorter on the non-drive side.

But for half of the spokes on each side to be loose, I would check the that the lacing is correct. Mixed crosses can be very confusing to lace.

It's normal for their to be a significant difference in initial tension between the pulling and trailing spokes. They take different paths to the rim, after all. Your situation with "very tight" and "very loose" seems outside that norm though. They are usually within a couple of turns of the spoke wrench of each other.

My suggestion when doing a mixed lace is to lace the 3X drive side completely first, then flip the wheel and do your two cross side. That way you KNOW you've got one side right, the valve hole and logos are lined up correctly, etc. Also means you have to drop the heads-out spokes through the ones that are already laced, and then weave them out to free them. Slightly more hassle... but not a big deal if it saves you from having to redo the whole thing.

I would think you would run into extreme difficulties with the heads-out spokes you have to drop in and pull out throught the lacing on the other side. Add 14G spokes in a tight holed King hub and I think it would be darn near impossible without plastic deformation of the spokes. Any tips for doing this?

It's not a problem at all. I do that "weave-thru" on ALL the rear disc wheels I build, because I use a reversed "mirror image" lacing on the disc side. As long as the spokes on the drive side are slack, you can press them aside enough to have the spoke go outside the cross down near the hub, and then just weave it through the outer cross without a problem.

Although I would probably do it when I forget which spokes to start with, not for any fancy pants lacing.

So with this mirror imgage lacing, the drive side looks indentical to the disc side? The drive side outside spokes facing backward and disc side outside spokes facing forward or the other way around?
