Mavic rear hub (x501?) - any good?(2 posts)

Mavic rear hub (x501?) - any good?Mikey

I just brought my rear wheel into the LBS because I noticed play in the bearings and wanted them to tighten the cones. It's an '01 Bontrager Race (non-UST) from a Sugar 2, with about 1500 miles on it. When I had the wheel off I also noticed a little play in the cassette/freehub (maybe a mm of side-to-side wobble) and mentioned it to the tech.

He's going to take off the freehub & lube it, and adjust the cones. But he was also suggesting replacing the hub. His suggestion was a Mavic X501 hub (it was the only hub they had in stock that's 28-hole like the Bonty), says the hub would be $70 plus the wheel rebuild and it allegedly retails for about $130. I have to wonder about the price since all the Shimano parts in the shop are full-retail, i.e. I saw XT cassette for $75 and other silly prices.

Now, I can't find ANYTHING on Mavic hubs on the web, they don't even talk about them on their website, nor do they mention what hub model is on their various pre-built wheelsets, so I don't know if this model is any good or better than what I've got, or how it compares to a plain ol' XT.

Can anyone tell me about this Mavic X501 hub and whether they think I need to replace mine?

Just got back from the shop. He just tightened the cones. Wheel spins good, cassette still has a little play, but should ride fine for awhile.

Turns out the hub was an MX601. Apparently Mavic discontinued selling separate hubs, but it's supposedly a high-end 300g hub. Guess I'll wait till my wheel has a real problem before replacing or dumping money into it.
