is it bad to use v brakes on a mavic 223 rim, i was going to go disks but unfortunately i can only use one certain brand on my rear (a certain brand i can't afford). i am kinda worried 'cause someone told me that those rims are really disk specific and the v's will do some damage. thanks for the imput

There's no braking surface on the disc-specific rims, so you can not use V-brakes on those. Get a set of regular rims laced to a regular hub if you're never going to get discs for the rear or a new frame, or lace the rim to a disc hub just in case. You don't NEED to have the same wheel front and rear.

If you're stuck with those rims you might try seeing if there's an adapter to use other rear brakes. Hopefully, it's not so proprietary that you're truly stuck. And, yes, it's bad to use v's on 223. You might be able to get some slim pads to actually fit on the flat section of that rim, but I doubt it'd have much, if any, braking power. Plus, it would be so close to the tire sidewall that you'd end up slicing a hole in the tire. Not good.
