700c and 26" with disc brakes, wierd idea... (10 posts)
| 700c and 26" with disc brakes, wierd idea... | adventuregeek Jun 14, 2002 10:05 PM | | Hi,
I've been trying to make my GF Sugar into a better commuter and had a bizare idea and am wondering if anyone has tried this ...
I currently have 2 sets of Bonty Superstock wheels, one with 1" slick and one with 2.1 knobbies, both have a cassette on them. I ride around town on the slick and swap the wheels for the knobbies when trail riding. It's pretty fast on the slicks, and the change over is quick since I have 2 sets of the same rims. However the small rolling diameter with the slicks tops out the gearing and rides a bit harsh.
Well on to my idea ... I was thinking of going to disc brakes so that got me thinking. I may be wrong on this, but with discs as long as you have the same hubs the rims's don't matter for braking. So potentially you could lace disc hubs to 700c rims for road use and 26" rims for trail use and swap them out fairly easily (with 2 rotors)?
For grins I mounted a 700c wheel to the front of my mtn bike (with front brake undone) and road around the block. It made for a much smoother faster ride on pavement.
Yeah, I know I could just buy a road bike, but why do that when you can have a wacky project to take on. Anyone ever tried this? |
| Cannondale already do this, check out the bad boy scalpel nm | Alex_uk_xc Jun 15, 2002 5:32 AM | | |
| Merlin Newsboy | Seb Jun 15, 2002 5:59 AM | | The Merlin Newsboy comes with 2 sets of wheels- 26" and 700c. Both use the same disc hubs.
Hmm, I wonder if that makes it a 29" mtb? |
| no seb, that would make it a 28" mtb. nm | Alex_uk_xc Jun 15, 2002 6:26 AM | | |
| Ok, so it's do-able ... | adventuregeek Jun 15, 2002 3:52 PM | | Anyone know how much brake adjustment is required for each changeover? |
| Um, Zero? | Seb Jun 15, 2002 5:21 PM | | We are talking disc brakes here, right? Both wheel sets have the same hub (not that it matters), and the rotors don't change dimensions. As far as the disc brakes are affected, its not any difference above what swapping tires might make. |
| For V's : 31.5mm higher mounts, get the Ultech adapters for that | Cloxxki Jun 15, 2002 11:04 PM | | Well, 700c-26"= (outer rim diameter) 635mm-572=63mm. Half wheel : 31.5mm when using identical brake surface height.
I'm running this Ultech setup up front on my commuter bike, with a 30mm Tufo tubular clincher knobbie. Makes for great cornering, and I could do trails on it it I wanted to as well, I'm no some-time CX ider for nothing...
Right now I'm looking at a nice and cheap way to get my communter the stay rigid and make a 700c disc wheel for it, so I can get it to work it with a 29" front tires. That will turn my commuter with modest geometry into a true XC killer. I once rode a 29" wheel up front without a brake, that was really promising!
I may also just get the Surly 700c fork, no need for me to swap back to 26" wheels. Just a wider tires turn the bike into an off-road specialist.
The Ultech will take up to about 34mm, but does so alsomutely great. Hey, I raced my VooDoo 26" hardtail with 2 700c wheels this way on the 2001 CX Nationals! Mud pile-up was bad though, but great that I COULD. With tires higher than 23mm, expect the BB height to increase considerably over typical 26" wheels+tires.

Happy trails,

| What about Cantis? | Matt Jun 17, 2002 6:44 PM | | That's kinda cool. I have a commuter with a 700c fixed rear wheel (no brakes) and a 26" fornt wheel with cantis. I wouldn't mind jamming a 700c wheel in the front, too. But I do need front brakes. Is that thing available in the states?

| should work - "V" and canti's use same bosses | Seb Jun 18, 2002 5:09 AM | | Any frame that can accept one, can accept the other. If this kit modifies a frame to work with V's for 700c wheeels, it also will make it work with cant's and 700c wheels. The compatability problems between "V" and canti's arisse from issues invoilving cable hangers (canti's need them, V's don't) and levers (long pull for V's, high leverage for canti's). |
| What about Cantis? | Cloxxki Jun 18, 2002 9:52 AM | | Wouldn't know, really. But we sell all over the world, so you don't really need a dealer in the states all that much.
Haven't sold them for some though, with an order being placed we'd have to check with the distributor that sold them to us before.
Still, the 34mm tire limit bug me. I'm thinking of ways to place the brace higher, to make it accept a 52+mm high tire. Sure beats buying a new 700c fork, even if it's easier and cheaper. |
