Need a disc rim(2 posts)

Need a disc rimLBA
Jun 16, 2002 2:43 PM
Need advice on a strong, but still light disc rim to go with Hope Bulb hubs. I have been thinking of Mavic 317's, Bonty Mustangs, or WTB Laserdiscs. Any thoughts?
LazerDiscs are sturdy, but much heavier than claimed. VXC?Bianchi4Me

The WTB Lazerdiscs actually weigh in at 470g, so they aren't really "light xc". They are extremely sturdy for technical XC, and a good choice in areas where sidewall strength is important.

The Mustang ASYM (now Mustang "OSB" for 2002) is a nice rim, and averages about 435g. If you need a "general use" XC rim it's a good choice for discs due to it's reinforced spoke bed. If you are referring to the new disc-specific Mustang rim, I haven't seen one yet.

The Mavic X317 is the lightest disc-specific rim you can buy at about 405g for the black ano version, and is intended for "competition" style wheels. Sidewalls on these are pretty thin, so if your nickname is "big air" or you ride in lots of rock, these may not be the most durable choice for you.

A rim you didn't mention, that is an excellent disc-specific rim, is the Velocity VXC. These run about 412g average, and seem to be holding up somewhat better than the X317s or Sun DS1-XCs I've built. Not a major difference, but every little bit helps. They are currently my top choice for building light disc wheels.
