After hub rebuild, still some low growling- are hubs shot?hobart

I just took apart a front Gary Fisher and rear Shimano Parallax hub. I had bought a bike on Ebay and just decided to rebuild them, since by surface appearances, the bike was not well maintained. After putting in new bearings and grease, I noticed that both wheels have a slight growl when I spin them on my workstand. I haven't noticed this from other hubs I've rebuilt, although I've not rebuilt too many.

Any ideas? I measured the ball bearings before replacing them, but I lost count of the original ball bearing quantities. But I followed a previous mtbr posting which said to just put in as many as will fit into the race without crowding. I also checked the cone nut tightness. I can't loosen up the nuts any more, because there would be too much play in the hub.

.....check for surface pits in both cups and cones? That's the usual cause (next to pitted balls [oooh, ahh!]) of growling hubs. Ya gotta look real close.

The correct number of balls is "fill the hub until it's full and remove one".

........I noticed my XT freehub was starting to go this weekend, ya wouldn't happen to have a Hugi freehub lying around, would ya? I'm gonna rebuild this one, but it would be nice to have a spare, since I'm on three years with this hub.
