Axle Mystery(1 post)

Can someone explain the difference between 9mm, 10mm, and 12mm axles. Which of the three are QR and which are bolt on? Is one stiffer than the others? Can typical rear dropouts accomodate all three, or, for instance, will a dropput made for a 10mm be unable to take a twelve? What about typical fork dropouts for the front wheel? Do they accomodate all three sizes?

Thanks, Nick
