| 4X wheel lacing?? | jdcamb Nov 21, 2002 6:59 AM | | What would the distinct advantage of lacing a wheel 4X. In most mountain biking situations I can't think of reason to go with 4X lacing over 3X. Bike messengers use it on fixed gear bikes to improve start/stop control and make a supple wheel. All things we don't really need. A 3X wheel will be plenty stiff, accelerate almost as good, and be easier to fix. Just curious I guess......jdcamb |
| Best reason not to... | shiggy Nov 21, 2002 9:04 AM | | ...is most 32 spoke hubs can not be laced 4x. On 36 spoke wheels I have not noticed much difference between 3x and 4x. |
| next best reasons.... | PeterFrampton Nov 22, 2002 9:52 AM | | after they won't fit on a normal rim-and maybe most hubs, too-is that 4x is, functionally speaking, a DISADVANTAGE to MTBers because the 4x is weak laterally, and on the trail we want a laterally stiff wheelset. The 3x is more than enough to transmit power on a well built wheel. 4x seems to be a poor choice for most bike applications. |
