| Thoughts on Shimano XT Disc/Mavic 317 wheelset from Jenson? | IbisJoe Nov 21, 2002 7:48 AM | | Anybody have this wheelset? http://www.jensonusa.com/store/product.asp?number=50330
I'm thinking about ordering, but looking for feedback. I already checked product reviews, just looking for more info.
Thanks. |

However, it is not rotational weight so it is not as big a problem as if it was a big pig of a rim, which the 317 is not.
The 317 is strong and resiliant without the piggish excess of the over-rated RhynoLight rims, which are actually less strong in the plane of the rim than the 317, even though they weigh a ton. The only place that the Rhyno is in the same league as the 317 is in lateral strength/taco-resistant strength where the Rhyno is pretty good. I only mention the Rhyno so much as it is constantly on sale somewhere, and a bunch of people on this forum are always singing its praises, for reasons that I do not get. I have had them, I have built them, and I do not like the Rhynos. |
| What about the Deore Disc and 317's on sale at Jenson as well? | AlphaDog Nov 21, 2002 9:54 PM | | I've always heard that there is no functional difference between the Deore Disc hubset and the XT disc hubset, is this true? Is there much of a weight difference? |
| What about the Deore Disc and 317's on sale at Jenson as well? | PeterFrampton Nov 22, 2002 9:45 AM | | I know that some XT is little more than cosmetically different from LX, but I DO NOT know about the hubs. I use LX hubs on some rim brake wheels that I have and they seem heavy-as in the disc version would be a BERTHA, but I don't know. Good question, maybe someone from a shop will chime in. |

| Deores and 317's are decent if the price is right.... | sthrnfat Nov 24, 2002 5:32 AM | | XT hub quality will be better long term. Seals / tolerances / bearing surfaces are higher quality. The Deore stuff is probably pretty good though.
Unfortunately most of the wheel deals that I've seen pair the Deore disc hub with a lesser quality rim to keep costs down. If you can find the Deore paired up with a 317, and find that there is a big enough difference in price, I wouldn't hesitate to buy a set. The hubs will be fine - rims will probably be roughed up from abuse before you have hub problems. Hubs will always work with even periodic maintenance - just may not roll as smoothly as when they were new - most parts are replacable for cheap.
Weight isn't that much of a difference - almost no diff on the front and minimal on the rear......
XT Disc Hubs (2002 - older may be heavier)

| Thanks, I bought a pair | AlphaDog Nov 28, 2002 8:57 PM | | Well I went ahead and got a pair from JensonUSA. Deore Disc hubs with 317's built by wheelsmith with wheelsmith spokes, $129 for the pair! 14/15 spokes. The hubs seem fine, same seal system as XT. Considering the list price of the rims alone is more than $129 I would consider this to be a great deal! |
