| Service old Crossmax front | BadHabit Nov 25, 2002 12:48 PM | | Circa 1998 Crossmax front hub: How are the bearings removed? Have already removed hollow shaft and the "retention strips" (plastic strips placed in the slots before the bearings). The bearings are press fit? |
| sounds like press-fit. | jw25 Nov 25, 2002 1:52 PM | | I haven't seen one in the flesh, but the design is pretty standard. The cartridge bearings should be a press-fit. You can get tools to remove them pretty cheaply, though the bearings are usually damaged in the process (usually not a big deal, since they're only removed if they're shot). Once they're out, the sizing info should be printed on the outside of the cartridge. Any decent bearing shop should have replacements, or search the web.
If the bearings are still good, but just feel dry or rough, you can pop the seals out with a small screwdriver or very carefully with a knife, and regrease. I wouldn't bother with solvents, just wipe the old off with a rag, and add fresh. When you replace the seal, the grease gets pushed into the retainer, and things should smooth out.
Hope this helps. |
