Hey all,

I was looking to update my crappy stock wheels to a newer, sweeter set. I'm looknig to drop under $200. I weigh around 210 (big bones :) and mainly do XC stuff. I ride a Giant Yukon with some upgrades (like a Duke Race :), I get a little air, sometimes I get bounced around a bit in the rock garden at camp Tamarancho in Fairfax, CA, but on the whole, but I'm not a gear killer.

Wanted to get XT hubs, but my LBS is recommending Rhyno Lyte rims, but they seem like they're pretty heavy. I don't do big drops or anything so I'm a little reluctant to put weight on in the worst place you can on a bike, the outer edged of the wheels. OTOH, I seem to have to tweak my stock rims a bit after each ride. I see that the 12 foot drop freerider set use these rims, so I'm thinking that they're overkill for my uses.

Any recommendations on a good stiff rim (for rim brakes)that does not weigh a ton and not too $$$?

Am I overthinking this?

Thanks!

I've got a set of like new velocity synergy ASYM rims laced to nuke proof atom bomb hubs. I used them for a road ride in june, and thats the only time they were used. email me if you'd like info. i'm selling them in the marketplace.

Thanks for the suggestion, but I wanted something a little less proprietory. Carbon spokes scare the beejezus outa me. Spynergys would be pretty pimp tho...

So fat I'm leaning towards XT hubs with Mavic x517 rims. I checked them out at the LBS last night, but they wanted around $100 more for the set than I can get mailorder. I'm all for supporting the LBS, but $100?

If anybody else can recommned another durable yet light XC rim, I would sure apreciate it.

By the way, the spokes ate 14 guage straight balck spokes, not carbon, so i don't know where you thought that was the case. anyways.

I'd check into some of the hand built wheel places. Brazen Cycle Works build a lot of velocity rims, which i obviously like, and then check some of the web retailers that hand build their wheelsets. Universal Cycle and many others. I think you'll be happiest with a hand build wheelset instead of machine built. I've been looking at disc sets as i'm upgrading and have found that my bike shop was way overpriced on the hand build (even the machine built) and i'm going to go with brazen for my set, a nice synergy set with velocity hubs (4 bearing hubs, little heavier than xt, but will hold up for the long haul)

good luck.

Oops. My bad. I thought these were those Spynergy numbers with the carbon spokes. I 'pershiate it, but I think imonna stick to something new. That way if it's messed up I can put a foot in somebody's a-ss.

I'm probably leaning towords something from Supergo at this point. Most likely machine built for price reasons. I'm a resonably handy guy. I'll most likely invest in a truing stand and go over it by hand before installing them. So far I've been using my brake pads as a guide on my current rims. I can get them almost spot on with this method, but spot on to what? I'm, sure the rim must be a bit dished by now.

Thanks!

Did you check out Jensonusa.com? XT hubs with mavic 517 for $175 and are handbuilt not machine. Also XTR $219 and LX for $115. I'm leaning towards these too, I'm around 195-200lbs and don't want the extra weight of the rhino lites. Check them out, can't reallt beat handbuilt at those prices.

Yeah, I saw that. I also saw an ad of their's in some bike mag where they can upgrade to alloy nipples for another $10. I was unclear if they use double butted spokes, tho. I'm sure if they hand build the wheels, youcan chose your spokes, maybe with a minimal upcharge.

So dig it. I found out that universalcyce.com builds Bontrager Mustang rims with XT hubs for around $180. I'm getting them with XT Disc hubs and alloy nips for $203. Killer deal!

I've been reading reviews on these guys and it seems that even the clydesdales can't bend them. They weigh a tad more than the Mavics, (425g vs 400g)but seem to be a lot more durable. It seems that half of the reviews on the Mavic 517 complain that thry are a bit too lightweight and the other half say 'it's not a freeride rim.' Nobody is bitching about the Mustangs

I just wanted to thank you all for you input.
