| good disk xc country wheelset for 200lb rider | ross Nov 26, 2002 7:14 PM | | So my birthday is coming up in a few weeks, and my friends are all chipping in for some new bike parts for me. They've come up with about $175, so I figured I'll pick up a new wheelset (since I just picked up a set of avid cps, I need the wheels to put them on now). I really haven't looked into anything yet, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. I ride pretty aggressive, so i'm thinking about rhino lites though they are heavy. Not that i'm a weight weenie, it's just that those are more of a freeride rim and I ride mostly xc. So if any heavier riders have experience with lighter wheelsets let me know. Keep in mind my budget is around $175. thanks.ross |
| xt disc/ryno lites @ jensonusa.com $170... | kam Nov 26, 2002 8:31 PM | | heavy ass hell, but there also hella bombproof.

| better yet.... | hardtailTrauma Nov 27, 2002 9:41 AM | | there is a deal offered in "Hot Deals", right on this site, from AtomBikes.com for an XTdisc/X317 wheelset for $199.00. This will be WAY better than the Rhynolite set-up.
The 317 is a strong, not too heavy rim. The Rhyno is a friggin pig, is made of softer aluminum than the 317, and is only as strong as the 317 in lateral deflection resistance, otherwise it is weaker than the 317. I have built with them both, and I call em as I have seen 'em.
You will curse the day that you purchased the Rhynos, trying to save a paltry $12.50 per wheel in comparison to the Mavic 317. |

That present sure beats a round of birthday beers. I really haven't looked into anything yet, so if anyone has any suggestions I'd greatly appreciate it. The disc wheels that I have are the Mavic 317's laced to Hügi hubs and I use the Avid mechanicals. These wheels were built for me by a local wheel builder following my destiny with moving from being clueless to having at least a pinch of a clue. That all happened because I wore out the side of my original Bontrager rims with the combination of V brakes, mud, water, grit and my 200 pounds not lasting beyond more than 1/2 of the riding season as rim wear-through got the best of me. The pinch of a clue I now have is that for the riding conditions I face mixed with my weight, the disc set up is better designed for longevity. The Mavic 317's are 32 hole and after several months of aggressive singletrack mixed with fire trail riding I can report that they have held up well. In other words, no lateral or radial truing needed as the wheels do "stand". Now, that's not to say my 200 pounds and riding style are identical to yours or that these rims will continue to "stand" as they have up to this point - but I thought I would just mention that they appear to be worthy rims for consideration. The wheelbuilder was told I was a "big guy" and I have no idea what spokes and nipples were used, but here again I assume - using the same materials - the quality of wheel depends on the builder. So your $175 (or whatever the final sum is you decide to spend for a disc set of wheels) should be directed at a quality builder who knows your size and can fit your budget with a set of wheels that will "stand". That will probably be a more important decision than whether the rims/hubs are made by manufacturer X or manufacturer Y. BB |
| Do they make a non disk version of the 317? | Jason W Nov 30, 2002 9:11 AM | | I was going to ask the same question about a good XC wheelset for a 200lb rider, I do not have disk though so I was going to go with the 517 first then after reading reviews decided on the rhino lites but didn't like the weight of them. I ride tiger mountain in Seattle which has alot of 1-2' drops, roots rocks and sometimes streams. Any suggestions? Ross- sorry to jump onto your post, thought it was better than starting a new thread for the same basic question |
| nope... | kam Dec 1, 2002 9:19 AM | | there is no non-disc 317 model. take a look at the bontrager mustangs. you can get a set laced to xt hubs for about $170 at universalcycles.com. great rims.
