2x disc side lacing(4 posts)

2x disc side lacingbig hit don

well i have been labelled foolish and told i was wasting my time and money but i am interested in building a wheelset with a 2x disc side.

i noticed shiggy's polka wheelset was apparently laced this way in front but he has stated he won't ride them.

so if i should build these would it be considered suicidal for me to actually ride them? i'm a svelte but aggressive rider who rides east coast rocks all year. i have spokes to lace 2x and 3x, so if the wheel falls apart, i can relace it 3x without much trouble. but i am really just seeing if it can be done. we all know it could be laced, but could it be ridden? thought suggestions and ridicule welcome

and happy thanksgiving

The wheels can definately be ridden, though maybe not as hard as 3x. A 2x lacing will transmit torque, it just causes a greater load variation in the spokes to do so.

In a 2x wheel, the perpendicular distance from the line of the spoke to the center of torque (the axle center) is shorter than in a 3x wheel. Therefore, you need to apply more force to the spoke-line to create a torque on the rim. The result is that when you use disc brakes the "braking" spokes will elongate more, and tensions on the other ("non-braking") spokes will be reduced more.

The net result is the 2x wheel will be less "stiff" in braking, and maybe not have as long life. It will still stop you just fine, its just working harder to do the same job. You'd defiantley want to stay away from lightweight spokes, even moreso than on a 3x disc wheel.
I said I have not ridden them yetshiggy

Not that I
i will not
ride them. I need to finish building up the bike I am going to you them on.

I am experimenting with the lacing patterns loosely based on the Mavic rear road wheels that are radial drive/3x non drive.

I nearly laced my front wheel radial on the disc side.

Mavic's disc mtb wheels are 2x with 24 spokes. The spoke angle coming off the hub is about the same as a 3x 32 spoke wheel.

sorry shiggy, i guess reading my post can easily be seen to imply an unwillingness to ride your wheels that could be misconstrued as an issue of confidence. that was not my intention at all. merely that you had not ridden them. (and i didn't know the reason) but i have known people to make things of little functional use, yet interesting all the same.

assuring me that you do indeed mean to ride the wheels makes me feel a little saner in going through with my idea. however, any increase in my sanity may be directly offset by the polka dot rims;o)
