ERD question for ERD gurus...(5 posts)

ERD question for ERD gurus...Tscheezy
Nov 30, 2002 6:24 PM
I have a set of disc wheels with Sun rhyno lite XL's (ERD 544) and XT hubs. I was thinking of swapping out the rims for a set of Snowcat EB-3s (ERD 554). Do you think the ERD's are similar enough (dif of 10mm) that I could use the same spokes?

Thanks,
tscheezy

I looked around and I think I may try the Alex downhill rims instead (ERD of 548) which should be a closer swap (4mm diff). Sound ok?

....the new ERD through a spoke calculator to see how close the new spoke length comes. That's the only way you're gonna know for sure.

THE ACTUAL ERD OF THE SUN RHYNO LITE XL IS 549 BY MY MEASURMENT ( PUBLISHED 548 ) I BUILT MANY OF THESE SAME WHEEL COMBINATION AND HAD NO PROBLEM WITH THE FOLLOWING SIZES.
FRONT DISC 263.5 - RIGHT 265 ACTUAL 263.7-264.9
REAR DRIVE 263.5 - NON DRIVE 265.0 ACTUAL 263.7 -265.0
aprox spoke length change = half the change in ERDSeb

Of all the measurements, changing ERD most directly affects spoke length. Its basicaly the distance 2 opposite spokes (with the hub between them, etc) muyst bridge, right? The spokes are pretty much in-line with that diameter, so the required change in spoke length is gonna be about half the change in ERD.

So the question is, would you be able to re-build the wheel using the new rim, given that the spokes are off by about 5mm? Almost definately not. Since the new ERD is bigger, you MAY be able to use the current NDS spokes on your drive side, but you might as well go all new, since you'll be re-lacing anyhow.

An ERD change of 2 or 3mm is rarely an issue, especially if the spoke lenght was "off" in a direction that favors the new ERD. But the two rims sound pretty diffrent in ERD, even from the most generous comparisons, making it likely you need new spokes at least 3mm or 4mm longer. Not suprising- aren't Snowcats singlewall?
