| 4 cross vs 3 cross | gary9 Dec 1, 2002 6:07 PM | | Having a set of wheels built, for a steel hardtail playbike. My intrest is mainly in strength. Is there much avantage in going from a 3x pattern to a 4x pattern. 14 gauge straight DT spokes with brass nipples will be used on a 32 hole rims. Thanks |
| There is........... | Mike T. Dec 1, 2002 8:37 PM | | ....really no advantage to 4x and it's basically a thing of the past. It's of no use on today's smaller flanged hubs as the spokes radiationg to the rim interfer with spoke heads in the hub. Not good. It was fine on large flanged hubs as this didn't happen. |
| No way for 32 spoke wheels. | CSB Dec 2, 2002 12:55 AM | | Spokes are crossed not to give the wheel strength, but torsional stiffness so pedaling or braking loads are better transferred from the hub to the rim.
The idea is to get the spoke to be more or less tangential to the hub. 3-cross is definitely the maximum number for a 32-spoke wheel. Even on 36 spoke wheels it is unnecessary and with some hubs, can create problems where there were none, as MikeT pointed out. |
