| can anyone explain why various wheel spacing exists... | Oliver Dec 7, 2002 7:45 AM | | This question comes from recent frustration in matching wheels to frames. My understanding is that BMX is typically 110mm, road is 130mm, cyclocross is 130mm, and mtn is 135mm. Fixed gear road at 120mm??? Then there's 132.5mm too (eg. Surly 'cross bike). How and why did the different spacing come about? |
| ask Darwin... | clary. Dec 7, 2002 12:10 PM | | It's evolution my dear Oliver. First came 1 speed, then 2 speed, then 3 speed, then 4 speed, then 5 speed, then 6 speed, then 7 speed, then 8 speed, then 9 speed, then 10 speed. Adding cogs was accomplished by spreading out the rear over locknut dimension (initial 5 speed has a over locknut dimension of 120mm) and narrowing cog spacing.
5 speed 120mm (initial release)
5 speed 126mm (contemporary to 6 speed)
6 speed 126mm (initial release)
6 speed 130mm (contemporary to 7 speed cassette)
7 speed 126mm (freewheel initial release)
7 speed 130mm (cassette initial release)
7 speed 135mm (contemporary to 8 speed)
8 speed 135mm (initial release)
9 speed 135mm (initial release)
track and single speed has over locknut dimensions of 110mm and 120mm:

| Thanks, Clary... if I really | Oliver Dec 7, 2002 12:48 PM | | thought about it, I guess I could have come up with the answer, eh? Feeling a little ambarassed, here... but thanks for the great answer! ;-) |
