Hello, i have the hub off an approx. year old Trek 4500, would i be able to fit a 9 speed cassette on it. If anyone knows id appreciate the advice.

The 8 speed cassette is exactly the same width as the 9 speed cassette. When they introduced 9 speed gearing, they just reduced the spacing between cogs to make them all fit into the same amount of room as an 8 speed cassette. Shimano markets the hubs as "mega-9 compatible" which kinda makes it sound like they did something different to them, but that's not the case.

By the way, a "freehub" is what you have. A "freewheel" hub uses a thread on gear cluster that also contains the ratcheting mechanism. A freehub has the ratcheting mechanism built into the hub.
