32 hole 3x or 32 hole 4x????(4 posts)

32 hole 3x or 32 hole 4x????SIR J

I am about to build a pair of 700c wheels for a 29" mountain bike. The hubs that I like are only available in 32 hole so I want to go that route. Many people that ride 29er MTBs ride 36 hole wheels for lateral stiffness. So, how much stiffer will a four cross wheel be versus a three cross wheel? It seems to me that I can build a wheel that is slightly lighter than a 36 hole wheel with the same lateral strength by using a four cross lacing pattern. Any thoughts?

...you can not lace most 32 spoke wheels 3x. Too much angle at the hub.

Second, You get more lateral stiffness with fewer crosses. If you are not using discs, lace the front wheel 1 or 2 cross and the rear 3x drive side and 2x non drive.
You meant "can't lace most 32 spoke hubs 4x" (nm)NCN
