| Truely Odd SPIN Wheel conversion Question (26 to BMX???) | Scott_in_Jersey Dec 9, 2002 9:15 AM | | I know this probably won't work, but I thought it can't hurt to run it by you wheel guru types. I recently bought a TX Fireman's cruizer 1x1 frame with BMX rear spacing (110MM?) for a 26" wheel. I own 2 rear SPINs, 1 20 BMX single speed and a 26" (135MM?) cassette hub wheel. Is it possible to swap out the axles and convert the 26" cassette rear into a freewheel rear with BMX spacing? This is about the only way I can think of creating a set of 26 inch 1x1 "mags" which is my ultimate goal. Thanks for any feedback, assistance, reality checks, etc...
Here's a photo of the rear drops in case that helps. I dig the old arc style.
Thanks!

| Maybe. | jw25 Dec 9, 2002 12:12 PM | | Since the wheel's a cassette-type now, it probably doesn't have any threads (for a freewheel). Surly makes a "fixer", that'll put threads onto a Shimano hub, or a hub using a Shimano body. They ain't cheap, but cheaper than a new wheel, and you'd get to use the Spin.
To see if you can use it, take the axle out, and see if you can remove the freehub. If so, check the back - it should have splines that lock into the wheel itself. If these are compatible with a shimano freehub, you're in business (check the pic).
Surly says you can space the wheel down to 120 mm, so chances are good for 110, and if not, the frame could be spread 10mm easily. I'd talk to them first - www.surlybikes.com. |
