32 or 36 hole?(3 posts)

32 or 36 hole?marktw

I read at a link on Daves Wheels website that a 36 spoke wheel with 15 gauge spokes is actually a bit lighter than 32 hole with 14/15 gauge spokes and is as stong or stonger. Anyone using this setup on disc wheels?

Yeah. The way Dave builds them they're lighter. Dave likes to mix it up with gauges and brands and spoke patterns on his builds. He's possibly the best when it comes to exotic builds. Good dirt, Paul

36 spokes is stronger. And swaged (butted) spokes are more durable because the thin midsections stretch to take up the stresses (instead of allowing the stresses to concentrate on the bend or the threads). But swaged spokes, especially thinner ones, wind up more, so they take more work and skill to build and true than straight gauge spokes.

I'd choose 32 front, 36 rear, swaged spokes, brass nipples, and 3-cross lacing.
