| WTB/VXC the best deal??? | danny K Jun 6, 2003 8:33 PM | | Odds and Endos has the new WTB/American Classic clone hubs with db spokes and alloy nips with a Velocity VXC rim for $324 shipped.
Weight is 1590 grams, assuming without skewers.
Is this the best bang for the buck on the market? |
| Be hard to beat that price | Duckman Jun 6, 2003 8:44 PM | | Put it this way...last Nov i had amclassic build me their std build..
vxc rims
amclassic ultralite disc hubs
dt 14/15 db spokes
Blk brass nips
Same as yours short the nips..."sniff..sob"...but lots mo money.
$560 shipped. Good wheelset, but..i'd go your way if i had to do it again. Have never heard anything but praise regarding the builder at Ods and Endos. Have had zero probs since recieving them, and i ride alot here near pisgah, n ga, etc.
You could do a whole lot worse for sure. |
| Be hard to beat that price | danny K Jun 6, 2003 8:57 PM | | Just got off the phone with a friend.
Turns out a local mechanic who wrenches for a slew of world cup racers is building custom wheels and price matching anything on the net!
Any spec of hubs or spokes or nipples, but ONLY Mavic rims since he is sponsored or has support from Mavic.
And he's got free checkups for 1 year, unlimited. So I could do a WTB/db/any nipple/Mavic 317 combo.
Of course Endo's price includes shipping so if the local guy has the same price locally, that includes tax but after the year's worth of checkups I figure the deals are about the same. No sense shipping the wheel back to Endo's if that ever arose.
Anyway, looks like both are good deals. |
| Do it! I'm riding that set from Mike @ odds and endos. | Billy Zoom Jun 8, 2003 7:48 PM | | It's my third set of wheels from him. His wheels are great and I don't know how he does it on the price. They're strong, stay true forever, and are very light. You can also switch spoke and nipple colors, which others charge more for. Great service too. You can also get some inexpensive bolt-on skewers that are extremely light from him.
You can't see the wheels closely, but I've got alternating silver/black spokes and nips. I suppose the best evidence is that I could have paid more, but I couldn't see the point.

| same, but with XT | danny K Jun 8, 2003 8:22 PM | | Nice bike, first and foremost.
Second, I thought about saving a hundred bucks or more by getting 317/xt hubs/db/alloy.
The set is just going on my 27 pound 5" trailbike, and I'd save money on skewers, too, if I got the heavy-as-heck XT hubs. The wheelset would only be 300 grams heavier. I'm not racing the bike so I don't see any sense spending $140 more. |
| Thre is a functional advantage to the WTB hubs, though. | Billy Zoom Jun 10, 2003 5:49 AM | | They have a faster engagement than the XT hubs, meaning when you start pedaling forward they "catch" more quickly, which to me is a nice advantage in some riding situations, such as when you're riding over rocks and have to time your pedal strokes. If that's important to you too, it may be worth it. Thanks for the comment on the bike. that was right after building it up. It's not quite that clean anymore.

| Look again ,its not VXC its Synergy | etal Jun 12, 2003 4:13 AM | | The 324$ price on the website is for Velocity Synergy rims not VXC. The VXCs seem to be more expensive but they are listed with a different hub so its not a fair comparison. I already emailed odds&endos for a quote on a Wtb-VXC setup so I can let you know how much it comes out if you want. |
| From Mike at Odds And Endos... | PedalPower Jun 12, 2003 9:52 AM | | "We can do the VXC rims on the WTB Lazer Disc Lite hubset for the same pricing I have listed for the Synergy rim pairset ($324 delivered). The VXC rims have been very good performers for us. They are slightly heavier than the X317s, but I think the sidewalls tend to be a little sturdier." |
| VXC vs Synergy - FYI | pixelninja Jun 13, 2003 11:33 AM | | I sent an email to Velocity, asking which rim (VXC vs Synergy) is stronger. Here's their reply:
The VXC and Synergy rims are both very strong but if I had to make a wager I would bet that the Synergy is just a bit stronger than the VXC. The VXC is lighter (only 5 or 10 grams per rim), however, so if weight is an issue you may want to consider that.
Best regards,
Mike |
| update to my order | pixelninja Jun 13, 2003 12:24 PM | | I'd placed an order with Mike at Oddsandendos for the Lazer Lite Disc/Synergy combo earlier today, but I just changed the rims to VXC. Why? After calling Mike (to question my choice), he convinced me that for the loose, rocky conditions that we have along the CO front range, the VXC's have a stronger sidewall that will resist being dinged and dented by flying rocks. Plus, they're a bit lighter. I can't wait to get them!
Another FYI - There was a $5 per wheel upcharge from Synergy to VXC. |
