Stan's No Tubes?(3 posts)

Stan's No Tubes?Fat Tire
Jun 8, 2003 12:52 PM
I am considering trying the No Tubes system with my Mavic 219 rims. Just wondering if anyone can tell me if this stuff works as advertised. I read on Stan's web site that the sealant needs to be replaced every 3 weeks to 3 months, depending on conditions. Is this accurate? If it makes any difference, I am running Hutchinson Python's with the 219 rims. Any help/advise will help.

Thanks,
Russ

I can't speak of your rims, but I've been racing with Stan's in my Mavic 517 and Python's for almost a year and I'm very pleased. Only once, did the hole not seal due to a tear in the tire about 1/4" in diameter. I replace/add to the sealant about every 2 1/2 months without a problem.

I'm happy with mine.I'll have three sets of No Tubed wheels soon.I've been using these since Febuary and put maybe 3000 miles on 2 sets of wheels. It takes a little while to get used to the different install techniques. An air compressor will really help, but don't use the cheap ones you can get to inflate car tires in an emergency.C02 might work but could get rather expensive. The only troubles I've had was when I tried to put on a used tire(Vredistein)with the system, the sidewalls were leaking goo all over the trail!I've had great results with Conti Verts and Survivals, Specialized Enduro Works and a Hutchinson Alligator.Make sure the valve hole in the outer rim wall is large enough for the thick base of the valve right at the rim strip.Make sure to use soapy water,it helps to seat the tire and tells you where the leaks are.Follow the instructions!!Don't leave anything out.Don't do it when you're in a hurry,be patient and make sure you have time to ride for 30 min. or so after the installation. Definately try lower air pressures.I weigh 175 with my pack and run 28-35lbs. pressure! If you hit obstacles really hard watch out or you'll dent your rim ruining the seal. You'll get all the traction you need,it's like having another inch of suspension(on a hardtail) and I haven't gotten a flat yet! We'll see how they do in the fall when the thorn's come out.
