Opinions of SRAM 9.0 hubs??(3 posts)

Opinions of SRAM 9.0 hubs??Brace1

I've seen these hubsets occasionally, but cannot find reviews for them. Overall I'm a fan of SRAM stuff, and would like to have some educated opinions about the 9.0 hubs specifically:

- Durability?
- Serviceability?
- Weight?
- Seals?
- Value?

What about the adapters for disc brake rotors if I were to upgrade in the future? Is that a wise move on a fairly strong, non-disc specific rim (i.e.: WTB Laserbeams, Bonty Mustangs, Mavic F519, etc)?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

I got a set of the 9.0 hubs laced to mavic F519's about2 years ago. I rode them through some of the crappiest conditions a bike could see - year round in new england; they've seen mud, sand, mud, snow, mud, overthehub mud puddles and also some mud. They worked perfectly for about 18 months with ZERO maintenence. I'm not a maintenence guy to begin with and I've never opened hubs, so I can't attest to their servicability. After 18 months of abuse, the rear developed a quiet clunk while coasting. 6 months later, I'm still riding it and it hasn't seized or anything. The front remains perfect. I say they're quite durable.

I think they're a great value; the weight to cost ratio is pretty good.

If you want to use them with disc hubs (as I have done) you do have to add the adapters, which will add cost and weight. And they're a pain in the butt to put on. You use a cassette tool, but the lock ring that fits the tool sits so close to the adapter that the tool keeps popping off. I haven't been able to remove my adapters for this reason. Also you should know that these adapters are different widths for the front and rear, so you must make sure you get one of each and install them in the right place.

Finally, remember that SRAM no longer makes these so if you do plan on going disc at some point, do it now while they're available.

I love these hubs, but after writing all that, I'm beginning to realize that perhaps they're appropriate only for a SRAM junkie. If they were still in production, I might feel differently.

So I've got a rear 9.0 SL (only diff is alloy axle, which has bent slightly under my 190lb weight, but I don't ride it too hard). I built it up with a disc adapter (they get you on that one, 30.00 for a little ring of alloy, I didn't have any problems mounting it by the way) on a WTB SpeedMaster rim, it was free, with DT 14/15 spokes w/brass nipples. It's run on a K2 short travel Razorback SL frame w/Tioga 1.95s and Stan's NoTubes system (awesome). It's a good, solid hub, no big problems, lighter than XT, but not really a light weight at just over 400 gms w/adapter. I think if I had it to do over again I would have used the new WTB ultra lite disc hubs, licensed from American Classic, very light at 275 gms and at only 150.00-175.00 online, a real bargain, only about 50.00 more than the SRAMs and when you look at 50.00 vs. the thousand(s) you have in your ride you realize that's a real cheap way to save almost a half pound. I'm about to order one from oddsandends.com, they'll build one up on a velocity rim and ship it to you for 185.00, now that's a deal, hell, a King disc hub alone is almost twice as expensive as this hole wheel built and shipped! Please, no wisecracks about Twainese manufacturing, I 've got a real sweet Razorback made there, It's a Turner Stinger design licensed by K2, and I couldn't be happier, except maybe the graphics but that's K2 not the manufacturer. More than enough said, good luck, enjoy the ride
