| I built my first wheel-- no grease on the threads | reroo Jun 12, 2003 9:02 AM | | I built my first wheel last night. It was easier than I thought. When I was done, I realized that I didn't grease any of the threads. What is the grease for anyway? Should I take that wheel apart and grease up the threads, or is there a half-arsed way to retroactively add lube? |
| Depends on how fussy you are. | El Kabong Jun 12, 2003 3:41 PM | | If you're fussy, take it apart, grease, and redo -- otherwise just put a drop of chain lube (the wet kind) on the nipple / spoke joint and let it soak in. It think I'd do the latter and consider it a lesson in remembering the details...
Other than that, how did it turn out?

| Depends on how fussy you are. | hectolyte Jun 13, 2003 8:24 AM | | The front wheel I built needed no lateral or vertical nit-picking. I just kept tightening the spokes a quarter turn to put tension on and keep it centered. When I de-tensioned it(pushed on the rim to let out spoke torsion), the wheel still looked perfect, so it's on the front of my commuter bike now. I'll see how it holds up to use.
Yesterday my girlfriend broke two spokes on the rear wheel of her commuter bike, so it looks like my skills as a wheelbuilder will get called into action this evening. And I'll remember the grease this time. |
