| UST Tubeless leak?? | JTF Jun 14, 2003 9:32 PM | | Just built up a set of UST 3.1 rims for my SS, but I am having an interesting problem I hope someone with more tubeless experience can help me. I am running a Hutchie Mosquito tire and I am losing all the air in about 3 hours. I can hear a leak at a spoke nipple about 8 away from the valve stem. I mounted the tire using soapy water, and have tried twice to re-seat the tire, to no avail. Anyone wizened in the ways of tubeless out there have any ideas? Why is it leaking at a nipple??
Thanks,

Did you make sure that you inflated your tires to a full 60psi for at least one night before riding them? That is very helpful in getting the tires seated properly against the rim. Before you ride the next day you just reduce the pressure to what ever you desire.
I've run tubeless for over a year now and have no problems with leaking. Though I use Stans liquid also so there is just no way mine will leak, even with small to moderate punctures.

| Hear the leak? | Ratt Jun 15, 2003 11:13 PM | | you may trust your ears but i don't. Dunk the whole tire in water to see exactly where its leaking from. If your ears are right and its the nipples make sure all the orings and seals on the valve are present and in good condition. In the rarest of rare the rim can leak at the weld but that could just be an urban legend that sounded plausible to me. Ok stupid question: you are using tubeless tires right? a tubeless setup should only use 5 psi a day max and after a fresh seat I only lose about 5 psi a week max |

I am SURE it is the nipple leaking as I can affect the quality of the sound by placing my hand over the eyelet/nipple junction. I did inflate to 60 psi and mounted the tire according to the directions. I currently have a buddy who has been running tubeless for about a year looking at it.
I sure hope it isn't defective, That would mean building the wheel over again!! |
| I bet | Ratt Jun 16, 2003 8:43 PM | | its the stem leaking. Try switching the stems between the wheels and see if you still have a leak |
| SOLUTION! | JTF Jun 17, 2003 7:29 AM | | Well I figured it out. I had mounted the small o-ring on the inside of the rim, not on the tire side. This was allowing air to leak in-between the rim's box section, and to the nipple with the path of least resistance. I looked at the Mavic drawing again, and it is very misleading as I could swear it shows putting the small o-ring on the inside of the rim (i.e. NOT in the goove/tire side). Anyway it is holding air perfectly now, lost less than 3 psi on 24 hours!
Thanks for the suggestions!
