| How do I get a dent out of my rim? | DudeOnABike Jun 15, 2003 8:41 AM | | I recently put a hole in my tubeless tire, and while I was trying to come to a halt, I must have hit a rock or something and put a small dent in my X3.1 rim. I put another tire on, and it still locks on and holds air, but I would still like to pull out this ding. The dent is right on the side of the rim where the braking surface on a rim brake wheel would be. It is dented inward and is about an inch and a half wide. Is there a way to bend this back out or something? Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

| cresent wrench | seb at home Jun 15, 2003 8:46 PM | | Put a cressent wench onto the rim in the are of the dent and tighten it up. It will grip the rim and let you lever it back out into the propper form. Work a little at a time, and you may want to pad the jaws with some tape. The results are genrally pretty good, if you are careful. The new Stanly "vice grip" style cresent wrench works particularly well for this (it allows a very snug fit), but any wrench with a deep throat will do. I havent tried this on tubless rims (ain't got none), so if the bead retainer is a lot beefier or some such, it may not work as well.
I've mostly used this trick on my Vecolicity 26" Deep V. The sidewalls ding kinda easy, but the massive triangular spoke bed section never deforms, so it's been "undinged" about 4 times now without ever needing any truing! |
