| Spokes: Competition VS Revolution | FishMan Jan 6, 2004 11:46 AM | | I'm looking to build some wheels for a new bike. I usually use DT Competition, but the Revolutions cost less then $10 more per wheel while taking off almost 50 grams of weight. This seems like a reasonable trade off to me. I've never broken a spoke in the middle (once at the nipple and countless times at the hub flange) so I'm guessing they wouldn't be much more subsceptable to breaking. But maybe I'm missing something. How is wheel stiffness effected?
For some background info, this bike will be a "all mountain" or "trail" bike so it will be lightly abused, but I'm planning on putting 36 spokes in the back wheel which should make it plenty tough.
Thanks! |
| v v v Look four posts down... v v v | Homebrew Jan 6, 2004 12:05 PM | | I would suggest looking at DT SuperComps which were specifically designed for XC disc wheels. Lighter than Comps, stiffer than Revs. Also, I think 32 hole is fine unless you are Clyde+ or particularly hard on wheels. |
| How 'bout the SuperComps or WS DB14s or CX-Ray? | Bianchi4Me Jan 6, 2004 12:14 PM | | If you want to split the baby, you can get the SuperComps (318g per 64 spokes, 2.0-1.7-1.8mm) and have a stiffer wheel while saving most of the weight you'd save using Revos(283g per 64 spokes, 2.0-1.5-2.0mm).
If cost is a factor, Wheelsmith's DB14 spoke (344g per 64 spokes, 2.0-1.7-2.0mm) is lighter than the Comps, and generally less expensive than the Comps too.
If cost is not a factor, Sapim's CX-Ray spoke is a smidge lighter than the Revos and has better tensile strength, as does DT's own Aerolite black.
I would compare the weight/cost savings of the Revos versus these spokes, not verus the Comps. |
